Actually that is normal and surprised it lines up again after only 3-4 rotations. Once it's rotated on some other engine it may not come back to the marks for 300-400 turns.

Obvious misprint in the FSM. Called 3 Toyota dealerships and none of them had an answer (of course).

Three Bond 1324 is the same chemically as Loctite Threadlocker RED.

Never heard of thread locker being used as seal packing or gasket maker.

Watched a few YT vids where they just used the three bond 1207B around the water pump area.

I never worked out the math for the 1NZ engine. For the 2ZR (1.8 liter Gen 3 Prius engine), you see the links on their marks every ninth time you see them, which is every 35 times around for the camshafts, or every 70 times around for the crankshaft.

For the 1NZ or any other engine, you can work out what those numbers are if you know the tooth count of the cam sprockets and the link count of the chain, as shown here.

yeah this engine like lot of Toyota engines require you put a dab of fipg when machined body parts meet in addition to the gasket. The valve cover for instance and the areas highlighted in your post.

The area's where the valve cover meets the engine head for instance requires a dab there too. I observed that and did that and had no oil leak there.

And the timing issue has been a bear on many rebuild posts. It sounds very difficult. The Gen 3 has timing set up issue too and many posters have failed there.

There's alot of Toyota assembly magic going on with this engine lol...

    Good Luck 92.

Here is the chain cover before assembly.

There is a weird divot where you have to add extra sealant, seen here:

Got the new timing seal in, pulleys and mounts on.

Can't do much else right now. The lower o-rings that came with the injectors are the wrong ones. I had to order 4 new ones from Toyota.

Also the brand new valve cover had a cut in it, and it was facing the cardboard which was undamaged. Some kind of factory error. I'm going to try it anyway before buying a new one.

The biggest worry is the coolant going through the sealed area on the chain cover and mixing with the oil.
The chain cover does not have a lot of oil sitting inside of it, so if it does leak, should be a rather slow leak.

Kind of a dumb design if you ask me, channeling coolant through that cover.
