Isn't Toyoda still the President of the Japanese Automobile Manufacturer's Associaton?

EDIT: Yes. Website here: Senior Officers & Auditors - JAMA

Is a problem since his opinions on EV's are looked upon by all the other Japanese Auto companies. His mis-advice could, and has, steered them in the wrong direction for a decade. Times change. He hasn't.

Looks like the shareholders push is working... remember life is a negotiation... goal of 620 mile range and automated battery factories... usually the first out of the box do not win the race...

Toyota’s Newly Revealed EV Plans Include 900-Mile Batteries
Notice they did not say we still think we need hydrogen for long range. They did not say we need solid state to build a lot of plug-ins, they just said they will have some in 2027.

The 2028 (5 year) plan is to go inexepensive non cobalt lithium iron phosphate for the bulk of their plug-ins.

I'm sure shareholders are sick of toyota's valuation lagging tesla's by so much.

Including the $5T dollar 2020 bailout that classified their members as a “shadow bank”
Toyota has always lagged technology waiting for others to go first and make it cheap with only a couple exceptions.

This strategy from a profit standpoint isn’t wrong but given the current environment they will be left holding the bag reaching for scraps.

Toyota with the exception of hybrids and plug-ins has been a fast follower. Given that toyota was leveraging tesla for the rav4 EV, they could have easily been in the game 5 years ago. For plug-ins they are now a laggard. I hope they catch up quick, but I have my doubts.

I think this is the problem with most US auto makers (except tesla) looking for short term profits at the expense of long term planning. Toyota has not had that problem until now. I think they can turn it around, but they need to focus. Ford and GM are now really in the plug-in game after some stumbles.

Toyota has always let others go first on almost everything( but hybrids ) and for transmissions, brakes, suspension, di, computerization and other goodies it’s never hurt them.

Battery and EV tech is different than a 4 speed automatic in 2018 though

I suppose you could argue they planned to use the same AT 60 years but I think being ultra conservative financially can definitely hurt bottom lines during major changes to the market

    - Toyota is developing LFP bipolar batteries, where an electrode acts as both the anode and cathode, . . .
This is important because Toyota is building a battery module where cells are internally connected in series:
    • Potentially a huge reduction in battery pack, cell wiring.
    • Most of the single cell, battery wiring are 'fuse links' that are resistive, parasitic heat generators.
    • Raises the battery/cell module voltages high enough that silicon or silicon carbide losses all but disappear.
If you take a 9 V battery apart, you will find a stack of individual cells in series:
    upload_2023-6-13_14-36-58.png
This is functionally what the Toyota battery 'module' is doing. It eliminates the per cell, fuse link in the series circuit between each cell. This brings the battery 'module' voltage up higher than semiconductor voltages allowing much finer control of battery 'module' balancing.

Toyota's approach, much like the Prius battery modules, is much more space and electrically efficient.

It was only a matter of time before they released a bipolar Li-ion battery. They've been selling bipolar NiMH in the Aqua for a couple of years now. It improves pack energy density. They are using it with LFP, which is on the lower end of the Li-ion energy density scale. This should be great for the lower cost EV market, but how many will Toyota actually make?

The scorn is front loaded, they're paying it all today at cheap rates in terms of brand damage.

When Toyota ships EVs that are really properly the Toyotas of EVs, the motoring world will forget and forgive pretty darn quickly.

Depends if they continue to lobby against climate change legislation.
However, I am very encouraged by the announcement. I look forward to seeing it in a few years.

Hear hear, I don't mean to sound like I'm counting chickens before they hatch... but they made the right noises, named some names and called some dates.

I'm good with that, let's see what they ship.

You might have confused politicians. Joe Kennedy was a stock short seller ~90 years ago. I think it has always been legal to short sell a stock as log as you can find long shares to borrow.

Amazed that a local dealership group of 2 Toyota dealership put on a Raleigh and vicinity TV ad the other day touting that they sell electric and hybrid vehicles and had sold over 14k of them. First time I had heard any Toyota branded advertising trying to link hybrid and electric as parts of the same.

I'm glad to hear this as a Toyota hybrid is much better than a traditional ICE. My ranking:
    1. Fully electric - lowest operational costs but limited selection of body styles and performance does not fit every driving profile.
    2. Hybrid electric - good operational costs but again limited selection of body styles and performance.
    3. ICE - worst operational cost but the widest variety of body styles and performance to meet any driving profile.

Toyota themselves regularly include hybrids and EVs together in the same breath. Previous announcements of upcoming EV models included hybrids.

Toyoda reelected by a 85 to 15 margin. Toyota stock soars. Unbelievable.

Hopes and dreams dept. Every two days Toyota releases what I call "Toyota Dreamware" press releases. Today's was the 1500 mile solid state battery that is just around the corner that they have developed. (hey, let's see it?) I'm still waiting for what they dreamed up almost 10 years ago to become reality. These press releases are what is running their stock runs. I get it. Tesla and Apple do the same.
