Yeah, I agree... But telling people that the cat theft crime spree is mostly over is like telling always masked up elderly people that they don't have to worry about Covid anymore. :)

Actually, older people should be concerned about Covid, and anyone immune compromised, according to the cdc

Yes, there's no way to use logic or reason with elderly folks who are some of society's most vulnerable when it comes to health issues... But the reality is roughly 7,500 die in the US everyday and at this point way less than 100 of those daily deaths are covid related, making them statistically insignificant in terms of primary risks to the elderly.

But masking reduces more than Covid viruses.
And the fact that 7500 people die every day has no relevance, it depends on what they die of and if it is preventable

Are those aggregate numbers, or are they specific to the population bisco was talking about?

(Side note: often, when pasting some graphic into a post, it is hardly any more work to add a citation or link to where it came from, and that way, other people can often answer their own simple questions about it without having to post followups or search out the same source.)

Yes, masks are here to stay. They off so many advantages... Like bank robbers and most thieves are more successful with a mask on. And women can save time and not have to put most of their make up if they put a mask on. And if you have Covid or some other type of cold or flu, a mask will help protect those around from getting it. And some people just feel safer covering up as much as possible, especially homeless people because what they where is as close to shelter as they got.

That was all Covid deaths in US, not specific to the elderly... And if after more than 3 1/2 years you still don't know the primary references for covid tracking by font & style of the chart that's a lack of engagement problem you're gonna have to work out yourself. As in the primary tracker with Bethesda shut down a while back and their numbers have always been slightly lower from this tracker that I posted: United States COVID - Coronavirus Statistics - Worldometer

It often takes less writing to put your citations in than to scold readers for lack of engagement when they ask.

Any handle on what the corresponding numbers are for the elderly?

I don’t know, at that rate it’s still a lot of people, 15,695 per year. I never question anyone why they have a mask on, figuring it is their business.

The basic truth/data of Covid deaths sound like MAGA? That doesn't make any sense to me, but then again I've never been to Boston...

I love the irony, because everyday I'm discussing forestry and other environmental issues with larege amounts of references and the people I discuss with rarely use their references, but love to dismiss my own references without looking them.

All scolding aside, there's some things that are so well known/well documented that the source is a given/don't require a reference... But I guess I'm wrong and you're right? Anyways, let's get back to talking about cat thefts...

The basic truth is that there may be more dying than reported, depending on how the cause is defined, and there would likely be more if people weren’t taking precautions.

on top of deaths, many more are seriously suffering for long periods of time both in the hospital and at home.
I’d prefer to avoid any of that if possible, and while sometimes uncomfortable, the mask is not a burden

There are still reasons why the courtesy of including your source remains expected, even when it's something you feel falls in the 'given' category.

For example, you can have readers who might even think "by font & style of the chart" that your thing looks like it came from Worldometer, but who will not have visited there for a while, or do not have the link ready at hand, or in their recent browser history. Can they google it up, find it in their older notes, or whatever? Sure, yeah. On the other hand, the one person who is known to have it right at hand when making your post is you, so people can sometimes wonder what information is carried by your choice not to include it.

You've probably even encountered posts, by others, where the information carried by their choice not to include their source was that they'd rather not help you quickly find out that their claim didn't come from that source, or was altered from that source, or taken out of a context that mattered.

None of that has to be true in your case, and you may have used the source completely responsibly, in which case it is win-win when you follow the custom of making it as easy as you can for your readers to confirm that. Makes better use of readers' time, and keeps you above the kind of suspicion that, regrettably but realistically, can be triggered by choices that make confirmation less easy.

    I knew.
I got it AGAIN last week for the second time.
Mostly like a bad cold. Really bad.
I am eagerly awaiting the next iteration of the vaccine.

I hope "again for the second time" doesn't mean the third time. Or the fourth....

The doc prescribed Paxlovid my second time, which made it a distinctly better experience than the first.

At the start of this month, the daily average was still more than double that, like 89 per day. It has been barely a month since the average rate fell below 100/day, barely two months since 200/day:
    upload_2023-6-16_21-26-13.png
2023 Year To Date (to June 14): 46,505 according to that same source.

Many people still use the term "epidemic" (though not "pandemic") to describe other causes of death significantly lower than that.
