Good evening, I have a 07 Prius base with 72K on the meter. Something interesting occurred today. Suddenly the Hybrid Vehicle Immobilizer light on the dashboard began blinking. It will blink if the car is locked or unlocked but not when running. It seems to be in a normal interval but I am perplexed why it suddenly started doing this. Normally, when I get into the car, put my foot on the brake and hit the start button, that indicator light will then go off. A friend said I just didn't notice the blinking light. No way! Absolutely NO way did that happen. That blinking light stays on when the doors are open or closed or when I open the doors. The other day I cleaned the car, no flashing light. Yesterday, I placed a call while sitting in the car while the car was off, no blinking light. According to the manual it is the light for the Hybrid Vehicle Immobilizer/thief deterrent system.
Anyone else have this issue? The owners manual is really not that great and Prius Repair & Maintenance manual I have really doesn't cover this topic either. No much on the internet too so here I am. You guys saved me recently with an issue on this car. Thanks guys!!!

Does your car have SKS? First thought is that the fob battery might be a bit weak and the car can't reliably detect it.

My 2006 will do that occasionally - especially if my fob is right next to my cell phone.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, this Prius has SKS. The key fobs are not near the car, in fact they are in same place I always keep them. I thought there may be an issue with the fob so I switched it with the backup I have. The issue still exists. I read and watch as many videos on the Prius as I can because they are so complicated. This is very odd. I am not sure if others have had an issue like this. I can tell you with 100% certainty, that flashings dash light was not doing that before yesterday. I was hoping it was simply something I did locking the car. Thanks again for taking the time to contact me.

Those items describe my Gen3 correctly. If the car is completely off, that lights blinks, regardless of door open or closed, locked or unlocked. I don't have a Gen2 to verify, but am not aware that it is different.

If I get into the car with the fob, and put it into any of ACC or ON or READY modes, that light does go off. But if I get in without the fob, e.g. for cleaning, it seems that nothing will turn it off. That is just its normal intended operation.

If it was off before, something was wrong, but has now fixed itself.

UPDATE: Over the past few days I spoke with different people who own Prius' or work on Prius'. Yesterday, I went to a used car dealer who specializes in the Toyota Prius and the repair of these cars I explained to him exactly what occurred with the car. He assured me the blinking light is normal and told me he could show me cars in the lot that are doing the same thing. He had no explanation why it wasn't blinking before but felt is was fine not. He did mention that these are great cars but they are also very complicated. I really want to know the reason for the light was not working initially but I guess I have to listen to the professionals.
Thanks to all who read my comment, to those who posted and to those who run this forum. Great site with great people who help!

Don't feel bad. I've met many owners of Gen 2s that don't even know there is a storage compartment in the front bottom of the center console.....I've found interesting things in these compartments in salvage yard vehicles....

LOL..... I'm glad I'm not that bad ..... LOL! The cars are definitely technical so I read the manuals I bought and look at this site. The tech I spoke with the other day did say these cars sometimes have little "ghosts" in them but they are great cars! :)
