Well that settles it! We all have to get 25 MPG, SUVs and pickup. <GRINS>

I don't buy my cars to crash. And if I did, the Tesla is one of the safest to be in.

Others are free to buy whatever vehicle they want. Until others want to pay me for the car I want to buy, I really don't care any more than anyone else.

    Slow news day?
This ‘news’ bubbles to the surface a couple times a year.
Heavier vehicles are safer, at the cost of making small vehicles less safe.

You can find numerous stories on this by substituting ‘Pick-up Truck’ or ‘SUV’ for ‘electric vehicle’ in this story.

I like small vehicles. If we, as a society, want to ban heavy vehicles, no skin off my nose.
Besides that (which brings a whole host of issues), do you have a solution?

Until the Tesla batteries catch fire.

Slavery is NOT dead. It's called financial indentured servitude.

These are the same people who become old and poor and eek it out on Social Security and blame the system.

What really bothers me is the number of people I've known personally that have been ran over and killed as pedestrians and bicyclists. I've also known a few people who've died from getting creamed by a larger vehicle as they drove a smaller one.

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO FREAKING DO TO GET MYSELF FROM POINT A TO POINT B WITHOUT DYING?! I'd love to walk. I'd love to ride my bike. I'd love to save a bit of money and not buy a gargantuan vehicle just to shield myself and my family from all the crazy drivers.

As a commercial vehicle driver I had to go through a lot of training to get my license. If certain groups of vehicles pose a greater threat to the safety of others, make the drivers go through a lot of rigorous training in order to qualify!

Sorry everyone, I'm poor and one day someone else in my family will be ran over and killed either walking, biking or driving our cheap, little, lightweight cars we drive around. That's my fault for not having the means to afford the $355 per month it would cost for the insurance alone in an EV much less the $800 and up monthly cost.

Another solutions would be if streets were completely redesigned with safety in mind. Get the pedestrians and bikes away from traffic for goodness' sake! Reduce the number of points where cars can intersect and t-bone each other! Make those streets and roads tight and windy so people have to drive way slower. I don't care if it takes forever for everyone to get to work! I'd rather that then find another person I know in the obituaries because he got ran over by an SUV!

What really irks me is that so many (or should I say nearly all) of these large, heavy vehicle drivers "dont' care" and think that "it will never happen to me, I would never run someone over." That's exactly why we have this problem in the first place. If people were more cautious and humble then they'd cause fewer accidents. But no, instead they feel empowered by their large vehicles, and since they're now invincible, who cares about anyone else.

I'll stop ranting here. But don't worry, you'll be able read about me soon in the upcoming obituary the way things are going.

.... because the ratio of toxic/carcinogenic gas fires per million miles is HOW many times higher than EV's per million miles?
    :)

Every body now days is a victim .... hey parents! - watch your kids! Keep 'em out of the streets!
(as tho smart cars running you over makes you any less dead ... what a crock).

Yeah. Once a BEV catches fire it takes thousands of gallons of water to put out and the car burns for hours.

The Hummer EV qualifies as a commercial vehicle in some European countries because of its GVWR.

Here, a regular driver's licence is all that's needed to drive this 9,000 lbs vehicle that can rocket to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

....... compared to a Refinery fire it burns for hours?

    Screenshot_2023-06-17-10-41-16-05_e4424258c8b8649f6e67d283a50a2cbc.jpg

and how many thousands of gallons does it take when the refinery blows up?

    ;)

..... Never mind thousands of injuries over decades & scores of deaths from accidents like this, & the Valdez, or deep water Horizon etc.
Thank you for accidentally doing a great safety pitch on EV's compared to the deadly alternative.
    LOL

we can't even solve the dui/texting accidents, a much more serious danger.

how many more small car drivers are injured/killed by ev's than by large gassers?

that was a ridiculous video, and the head of the ntsb should be fired

So let's make the entire interface with the car's stereo, heater/AC and other such things a distracting touchscreen.

Some reports say that using Apple Carplay or Android Auto accually may be worse than driving drunk or high.

this is just like 'bell the hybrid'. instead of mandating that all cars with a dB under a certain level require an audible pedestrian warning, they went after ev's only. and the press laps it up like moonshine

    It's not a question of small cars being unsafe in accidents w/ electric cars (the author insults readers thinking that only EV's are heavier) ... it's whether or not smaller cars are built with sufficient/crash injury remediation. This is born out from the following example;

Safer than expected Smart Fortwo performs like bigger cars in crash tests

Every time I pull up alongside a lifted truck, I think of a Prius or Corolla-sized sedan being hit and how the lift allows the impact to be at life critical heights. Heck, even for my two vehicles (Avalon and Rav4). Yet the aftermarket sellers of parts to do the lift contribute to the politicians. And they seem to pass the safety tests or they do until the NC politicians remove the requirement for yearly safety inspections. Yet every time I'm out at night I see cars/trucks with lights out. Every time I'm out in the rain I get water and stones kicked up by cars and trucks with wheels extending beyond the fenders and from trucks with lifts and no mud flaps. Every time I'm out I see weird colored lights or what used to be strobe lights used by emergency vehicles. Only now they are on the front of look-at-me cars and trucks.

But there are still two problems:

    1. Usually making small cars more big-car proof means more R&D which means more cost. Making small cars more costly kind of defeats the whole purpose.
    2. Safer small cars doesn't address all the pedestrians and cyclists getting smashed by SUV's and pickups.

exactly .... but the author of this EV hit piece would lose his point talking about non-ev's. CBS network & national Highway safety board seemed to be indulging in clickbait drama ....

As one of the rants above signals

Europe and Japan actually have superior crash tests that at least attempt to reduce injuries to pedestrians.
They also -tempt to design cities so people have safe places to walk and bike.

I always have to laugh when someone says I can’t import a European or Japanese car because it doesn’t meet our pollution or crash tests.

Literally is that a bad thing?
world might be better if none of our cars followed our standards.
