Within a week I have noticed three things so far between my ten year old Prius and my 2023 Prius. This is not meant to be disparaging but shocking and asking why.

Prius 2 had a spare tire Prius 5 has no spare

Prius 2 had rear window wiper Prius 5 has no wiper and yesterday it rained all day and I could not see anything behind me due to the water on the rear window.

Prius 2 when exiting the car the headlights would turn off within 20 seconds and the Prius 5 now tells me to turn off my headlights when exiting the car.

Prius 2 came with mats for the front driver and passenger and rear passangers while the Prius 5 one pays $400 for the rubber mats.

I will continue to bring more things I find lacking on the Prius 5. This surprises me since my Prius 2 was very basic while my Prius 5 is an XLE.

The spare and wiper are discussed in detail elsewhere, but their delete is mostly about cutting weight to get the best mpg rating, the wiper also helps with aero. Cost and pricing is a factor, too.

All the new Prii have auto off headlights. The warning is likely something Toyota added to the base software of all their cars since you got your old Prius.

Floor mats have always been an accessory with additional price forced on the buyer. Some dealers might comp them, but I'd rather not have them included, and get third party all weather mats with better coverage for less.

I’m assuming you mean gen 2 and 5.
Toyota has added many features over the years and deleted some.
But it depends on the package you choose in some cases.
It pays to do your due diligence and shop wisely.
As to the why’s, we’re all guessing, but in the end, it really doesn’t matter, it is what it is

You are correct. When I saw the car I jumped and purchased and have no regrets. Would do it again. It all boils down to cost cutting measures but when purchasing an XLE did not expect that!

If the moderator can delete this topic since it has been covered before and really is no sense in complaining over it I ask this topic created by myself be deleted.

In a severe accident, your life is in better hands with the Gen5 vs gen2.

That should be your #1 priority, everything else is minor.

Hmmm, well, I'd have to disagree with most of your complaints. Many vehicles today come with tire repair kits. Would I like a spare, yep, but not a deal killer for me by any stretch. Treat your rear window with Rain-X and problem solved. Easy fix there. My headlights turn off within 30 seconds after exiting. It is adjustable how that happens, just like the door locks and parking are adjustable when they happen. My XLE came with accessory carpet floor mats no charge so maybe you did not request them?

Reread my original post. It states it is not meant to be disparaging hence they are not complaints. I am pointing out areas of change within a ten year period which we now accept as standard.

Another area is the lack of physical hardware AM/FM radio and CD. It is now all software via Toyota's Multimedia Media Platform. One cannot play good quality CD but streaming files which does not have the High Quality fidelity of CD but perhaps user's will not notice that due to the highway road noise generated due to the lack of noise insulation.

I’m confused: it’s 2023, and and ten years back would be 2013, a generation 3 Prius.

our Canadian gen 3 at least had standard carpeted floor mats (see attached).

For gen 4 I think they’re axed, at least for Canada: at least my brochure makes no mention, either as included or as an accessory.

The lack of a spare on the new Prius is a deal breaker for me, especially considering the cars sheet metal has a spot for the spare, and the owners manual describes the spare, with the caveat “if equipped”.

the rear wiper I’m no that excited about: I’ve used it sporadically in rain; found it not that effective nor useful. Maybe more so in snow?

this is a good resource for US brochures through the years:

Auto-Brochures | Toyota Car PDF Sales Brochure/Catalog/Flyer/Info 4Runner 86 Avalon Camry Celica CH-R Corolla Corolla Cross Corolla iM Corona
Echo FJ Cruiser Highlander Land Cruiser Mark II Matrix Mirai MR2 Prius RAV4 Sequoia Sienna Solara Supra Tacoma Tundra Venza Yaris

How many discmans do you see out in public these days? The CD is going the way of the cassette and 8-track in cars because people aren't using them anymore. At least on the go, as their phone or an USB stick can contain their entire library.

I think those really interested in enjoying in high fidelity, do so at home with LPs and vacuum tube speakers.;)
    I was reading it as a gen3 #2 trim.
That confirmed what I remembered, the 2005 carpet floor mats were an accessory in the US. I know some dealers in the US would waive the cost of the mats. The mats for my 1996 Taurus were part of a value package according to the brochure there.

The JBL 6-disc CD player in our ‘10 Touring gets a lot of use. But admittedly we are aging Luddites.

My 2022 Outback came with a CD player, but it is optional, or only on higher trims. Being in the arm rest storage, I forget it's there.

A USB Thumb Drive came with the car. What is it's purpose? Music Storage?

That would make it a third generation and presumably a trim 2. From 2010-2015, the third gen came in trim 2, 3, 4, & 5 plus Touring and Persona versions.

Sunny day so took my sunglasses along for the ride in the beautiful Prius. Hmmm ,,,,there is no sunglasses compartment near my rear view mirror as my Prius 3. They eliminated it.
