    We need ideas folks!

My wife and I would like to trade in/sell our 2014 Prius 3 for a newer Prius Prime or a Chevy Volt. Something with a decent plug-in battery range.
But, we live in Southern Arkansas, rurally.

Local forecourts don't like hybrids of any type, considering them a battery failure risk while sitting unsold (mad huh? Info from America's Car Mart in Camden last week)
We can't sell privately, because we only have 1 car. Can't buy another on credit and then sell our Gen 3, because we are living on inheritance money with no income yet.
Budget is up to $10K, immediate payment, for a trade in in somewhere like Little Rock, where Prius Prime's (or Chevy Volts) are the nearest to be found at all.
I'd consider an auction, except the 2 in Arkansas are north of Little Rock or nearly into Oklahoma. In that case, we would only have the 10K to buy a car and who knows what we would be buying. Light damage would be an option though, such as needing a wing or replacing a seat. We would want to keep a newer car for many years.
So, in short, how the heck do we buy another car?
Are you local to this area and what happened in your case?
Is Louisiana any better a thought?
    Are there online options?
Sell ours privately and rent a car for several weeks?
Do you perhaps own a garage away from here and have Prius Prime(s) for sale? How would transporting work?

Our budget would realistically suggest a 2017 Prius Prime, average mileage. Some (about 4) are in Little Rock 100 miles north and we would prefer to not be held over a barrel with those options, even if they are still available. The drive is no real issue, but repeated drives would be.

I introduced our 2014 Prius 3 on here about 5 years ago. It is still practically dent and scrape free at 115K miles. Oil changes at Toyota dealers every 5000 miles. The EGR tube was cleaned soon after purchase. Faults are a 1" windscreen stone chip and the roof antenna is partially missing. Otherwise, nothing wrong with it. A squeak from the AC blower fixed itself, that's how good it's been!
Valuation is $8500 with Edmunds online appraisal thing.

    What would you do?

Hey bisco... I've not been here for a long time but remember your name :)

Have had a look at such things, with no real idea of how it works!
Am not opposed to online trading at all, will research it further and thanks for the input.

A lot of dealerships will give you an online cash offer pending an inspection. You can use that value towards the new car that you want. That way you can sell and buy your new car all at one spot in the same day. I would only buy a car in the state you want to register in to avoid extra taxes.

Wait a year or two? Things are nuts right now, and you seem to be saying you have a creampuff.

By the way, what's your meaning with "forecourt"? Just a typo?

Hi Mendel, good to see you again too :)

Things are indeed nuts... I've been following a few YouTube car channels, dealers etc.
Main trouble is, that we are living on an inheritance from my father's estate, after moving to Arkansas from Oklahoma. It's only now that we have funds to upgrade the car, mixed in with house purchase and upgrades to it. Plus, Gen 3's are getting a little long in the tooth and battery issues may result in a couple of grand to replace that we may not have.

The use of 'that' may indicate I'm originally from the UK, hence forecourt. Used car lot is the meaning.

Don't get a Volt...there are no new replacement Hybrid batteries available...if something happens to your battery even under warranty they replace it now with used cells...... also very long wait times for part (3 months plus on a BECM). Chevy doesn't seem to care about them any more because they are discontinued.....
I had a 2019 2 years ago and loved the car...but sold it because I could see these problems coming.

Since you indicated that you need the sale money from the old car for the new car and can't be without a car, Bisco makes a great point (as usual).

To sell to CarMax, you drive in--they tell you what they will pay for your car on the spot and hand you the money.

To purchase from CarMax, you can shop CarMax nationally and pay a transfer fee to have the car delivered to your local CarMax, if your local CarMax doesn't have what you want. There is no obligation to purchase any car transferred, but you are out the delivery fee.

CarMax upsides: easy, no hassle, no negotiation. 30-day money back, no questions asked if you don't like the car or take it to a mechanic who finds a problem. From what I have heard anecdotally, they couldn't care less about taking cars back. No pressure whatsoever.

CarMax downsides: you are not going to get the best price -- either for the car you sell or the car you buy.

Each buyer has to determine whether the upside outweighs the downside.

Thanks all and sorry to Noah for missing your post. Keeping a purchase within the same state does make sense for taxes.

Great points bettergolf. I suppose nearly all of us have become used to preventative oil catch cans and cleaning out the battery fan, rather than having components randomly fail on Prius's.

I had a look at CarMax yesterday. Prices were high, trade in was low ($8000 for the Prius). It was interesting how they put the price for shipping a car on each vehicle, such as $635 or $225. Makes me laugh though, the shipping is to the 'local' center. Ours would be 100 miles away.
A video uploaded by Car Questions Answered yesterday highlighted the sales model CarMax have:

Not a good company to deal with if you have to sell your car. But, they are there if you have to sell your car

Kelly gave the trade in as $9250 when looking through Auto Tempest.
Karl Malone of El Dorado offered $10,000 after the last oil change there. Our motoring world would turn rosey if they got an affordable Prius Prime in! Well, the car just flashed up that it wants to drink some new oil, so I'll have a word during the visit.

Carfakes is not a reliable place. Several stolen vehicles caught after the sale.
They will never give you what your car is worth. Even though they over charge, they make
a lot of money off people.

I know you're not is a good place and have to take what you can get...

To answer “no cars for sale, how to upgrade...”

You either have to steal one, trade or borrow one.

Honestly buying a $10k used plugin will never be a good idea. The cost to replace that battery will make standard Prii batteries seem like a super deal.

I would buy the best standard Civic, Corolla or Camry with some exceptions. Then privately sell the gen3 quickly before the gen3 market crashes back to reality.

Thanks all, good advice all around!

Am wondering about sitting around and waiting. A good deal is possible but it's not the norm and the situation changes day by day.
Point taken about older plug-ins too and battery cost.
It would make sense to put the money away and not use it for several months, except in the real world something always comes along and bites it from the hand. It's essential to have a 100% reliable car out here.

All is good with the car right now, but for further out I'm wondering about an Italian Tuneup on the engine, will look on here to see if folks have tried EGR cleaning in such a way (spraying into the air cleaner at cold start, maybe). Had also thought someone might have tricked a Prius into running from an Ecoflow portable power station by now too. Plug it into the car, drive around, take it back out when there's a house power cut lol

Useless on a modern fuel injected engine and hard to do on a computer controlled engine that must stay in sync with the electric transaxle

Requires removal and hours of effort. Nothing poured into the intake ever makes it to the egr.

The holy grail and only achieved in the movies and people's dreams. A few companies attempted to parallel the hv battery to increase 20 mph ev from 1 mile to 2 miles. Wasn't worth the thousands required.

Best use of ten grand? Either fix your gen3 with an engine rebuild and a new hv battery

    or

Buy one of these and sell your gen3 in the next four weeks.

Budget Oldies But Goodies (w Lower Miles)
    2000-04 Avalons (no rust)
    2004-06 Camry V6
    2005-08 Corolla (very good)

Option 1 means you have a solid gen3 for five or more years and good mpg. No money left.

Option 2 means hybrid issues are someone else's problem. You get your $10k back because you flipped that gen3. You open a 5% CD and have $12.5 in four years which you put on a low mile 2022 hybrid with low miles. Along with the majority of the new to you Corolla value added in for a down payment of $20k.

i tried the italian tune up (hard acceleration and high speed) it worked for the problem i was having with the engine not shutting down, but didn't help with the stuttering and juttering.

i messaged my local dealer about their online inventory. the only thing they had in stock (that i was interested in) was a prime rav4. unfortunately, it was gray. i can understand

A dealer near me has red and gray rav4 primes and two toyota evs. For significantly over msrp and all kinds of distributor and dealer add ons.

I wouldn't use the Techron in the Gen3 with an older head gasket. Seems that was a root cause in my ~284K 2013 going.

Granted; overfilling with oil, PCV Valve bad and having my engine grill 100% blocked aided. All in all, did make for cleaning the Intake and EGR Circuit easy albeit goopy versus sintered dry.

Still getting great MPG performance, though I hear bubbling when I start the car and yesterday was my first almost three times in a row starting the car having the shakes rattle and roll for a second or two. Between the first and second experience, I filled up the gas tank and at the station for some reason started typical.

I don't think techron caused any damage to the head gasket.
It's been in fuel for a few decades already.
