Several months ago I was backing out of my driveway, and while watching the passenger side to be sure I did not hit the garbage can, I ended up whacking the side mirror on the driver's side with the recycle bin and knocking it off the base.

All the wires are still connected, and I was able to stick it back on with some electrical tape wound around the post and have it work great, once I used the door button to reposition it so it wasn't angled to the ground.

Until summer officially hit and our 95 degree temps the last week melted the tape and I came out of work today and found the thing dangling by the wires again.

Didn't have any electrical tape there at the office, but DID have some gaffer tape that my boss helped me MacGyver a very ugly temporary fix to at least get me home again. And was going to use some epoxy to try and fix until I did some reading tonight and got the gist that maybe I just need a screw or something to reattach it permanently again?

Most posts seemed to be more about replacing the whole assembly, which I don't think I need to do, just need the how to to reattach the one I have since all the wiring is still attached and working. Is that possible?

It is a 2007 touring model.

TIA. And please excuse any missed typos, am tapping this out on a tablet at 2:30am.

Yeah typos are great No you're not reattaching the mirror to the stanchion that sticks out from your door glass corner that is now broken there were screws and a pivot on that and you broke it in the wire is still connected many here have done the same thing It's not a glue situation If you were to go over and look at your other side mirror carefully generally one would easily see this unless they are just not really mechanically inclined at all so if you go over and look at your correct mirror the one that still works you can push it in and fold it in and you can push it out to where it's supposed to be but you can't push it backwards like the trash can did once you do that it breaks the hinge and the pivot that's built in it You should be able to clearly see this it is broken forever You can try to glue it with goop and other glues it will not hold worth the crap for me and you can buy new mirrors aftermarket for $23 or you can go to the junkyard and get an original for like 25 and most markets except California pick your poison glue is not going to be it tape is generally not going to be it just the fact that you're using tape generally will tell somebody that's a little mechanically inclined this is a purely temporary fix and the reason I'm using tape is because pieces of plastic and possibly metal threaded pieces are missing and broken once that happens they are broken plastic is injection molded once it's broken it's kind of finished That's why the planets falling apart because there's plastic and all the ocean and everywhere broken plastic that people couldn't glue and tape anymore so it gets thrown away along with plastic bottles your detergent bottles from your washing and what have you It's all the same.

Difficult to suggest a course of action without a pic.

Replacement mirrors are $40 Amazon, Rockauto.

I've been driving around with just the electrical tape wrapped around the base, until it melted away while I was at the office yesterday, and came out to it dangling from the wires again. And that works fine, I don't NEED to have a mirror that folds into the car, as long as I can still adjust it with the door button in the car, which it still does, even wrapped up like I have it right now.

I had the tape just wrapped around the base, which is still attached to the car, and it worked well, but my boss suggested the extra vertical strap just to keep it more stable at 70 mph beltline speeds, until I could reattach it more permanently.

That's why I don't really need a new assembly, just want to reattach the OLD assembly. Because it still works. :) Is there no way to just do that? Thnx.

I forgot that the side mirrors actually fold in to the car, but that's not actually something I NEED, just looking to re-attach an otherwise perfectly good mirror to a perfectly good post, using something that won't melt away when it's 95 degrees out there for a few days in a row. I'd be fine with replacing the whole assembly, if the wires weren't still attached and the mirror wasn't working perfectly fine otherwise.

Oh yes you can make it happen Why don't you just use goop. Or some other type of heavy duty glue maybe urethane-based like gorilla glue clear or you can retape it again and every so often just retake it as the 130° mirror sitting in the sun melts it more fubars the tape glue it up in the evening when the sun's not beating on it Do it in pieces and stages then somebody will bump into it and knock it all over the floor again or dangling from your is $40 really that big of a deal where do you live I can send you a mirror yeah I would really do that think I'm BS'ing try me

I agree with @Tombukt2. Replacing it is a much better fix, especially since he has one that he's offering you and he's nearby. It's very easy to replace.

My wife did this recently on her Prius. Bought a new unit for $45 bucks and replaced the whole thing in 15 min. Well worth it best option IMHO.
