Time to sell my gen 2 Prius, I'm thinking about harvesting parts instead of selling however.

The battery is still strong (new prius batteries...) with about 50,000 miles on it; and I know I could get a lot for the cat. I can easily take the battery out myself, because I put it in, but I don't know about the cat. My question is; how easy is it to sell a cat, and where do I do it. And what do you think about the value of the battery? I was thinking 800.00. My car has some rust on it, and it's at 203,000 miles. It's time to retire it, I've done the best I can. It was recently inspected by my mechanic was clear it wouldn't pass next year without rehabing the rust spots. I've got it posted online but am not getting any bites besides people who want to "pay cash, today" and then don't follow up when I ask questions like "will you be registering it?" Or they ask me straight up if it still has the cat. They're clearly wanted to buy it cheap and harvest parts, so why not do it myself?

You can legally sell your catalyst as a used autopart anywhere you like. Nobody in California is supposed to use it but that's on them.

If anyone were to get suspicious, you'd be able to produce the title to prove that you removed it from your own car. And nobody's going to care.

Yeah the battery sounds about right people get around 6 $700 possibly eight maybe not The bottoms slowly starting to fall out a lot of this stuff at least down here where I am maybe not in Western or upper Massachusetts things may be still kind of hot up there car price wise but I expect any minute this is going to make some roaring turns towards the bottom of the scale I don't think this is sustainable. But maybe it is because certainly the manufacturer of new vehicles is horrid from Ev 's back to gas cars. We are really getting to a seriously throw away society at present times some of these new cars are complete throwing the bin the minute they do anything too much out of the ordinary It's just crazy and many of the younger folks have just fallen into Uber and all those other rides services that I don't know just seems really funny but 14,000 2007 cars is not sustainable there's none to be had pretty much where do people keep turning up with these 14,000 07 Prius? There's only a limited number to get You can't really refurb or rework these cars like a classic car or anything like that they're still mostly plastic and that sort of thing just a little bit higher quality or way higher quality than we have now but this is all very purposeful. To extract maximum dollar from the general public for a super not very good quality product I mean just look at the Teslas and things like that that are burning up blowing up front ends falling out drive train can't handle the power and load You name it all from somebody who's become the number one car maker on the planet and 10 or 12 years Go figure GM's been at this for a hundred just goes to show you somebody come along with some funny shoes and a funny hairdo and all of a sudden they've taken over GM Chrysler Plymouth everybody with a car that we can't even supply enough power to holy moly.

Yes you can part it out and make more. But what will you be doing with the shell? Scrappers are a little picky lately, getting them to come get a junk car without the good bits is tougher. You can always get out the sawzall and cut it up into small bits then rent/borrow a pickup.

Generally scrap metal people not necessarily salvage yards will take the scrap metal if you've got the parts off if there's no engine sitting in the car most of the plastics been removed door panels console - etc It's got to be pretty well down to the metal most people aren't really willing to do that they just want to sell their battery sell the 12 volt sell the hot moving parts off the cars quick as possible which with a generation two is pretty much turning into not so much. Rarely are you going to find somebody with a good HV battery to get I mean they're few and far between and then when you do find them person is trying to recoup. Most of the pennies they spent this is the natural order of the day people say oh I just bought that $2,000 battery 2 years ago I want $1,500 for it wrong never going to happen It's going to be sitting in your carport for the next 5 years nobody's going for that generally speaking so there's those problems too. Sometimes they don't want to come if you're chassis doesn't roll so if you've pulled hubs and wheels the things sitting on the ground you're backing yourself into a pig and a poke because you don't know any better makes perfect sense I used to work in the salvage industry long time ago when I was a kid so I kind of know how it goes and I know who to call in my area I'll generally get $400 for a shell the metal for the most part no matter what it is Mazda Miata or a Cadillac STS.

My thoughts too; I could very well end up paying someone to take it away.

If you cutting it up with a sawzall you can take it to the dump in a small trailer being pulled by your other Prius or your Cadillac STS or whatever. I do that with hot tubs walk-in coolers all kinds of stuff used to be pretty regular being pulled in my floe plastic aluminum trailer 5x8.

In the end I think I'll end up being lazy and not wanting to hunt down the tools and take the time to do this. Not to mention finding the right shop and haggling price.

Oh no, that's far too much work for me!

Yes chopping up a car with a sawzall lol is an incredible amount of work with little return.

I sold my oem cat on eBay for i think i can't remember exactly like $1200 but that was 3 years ago the market price may have gone away. Costs you nothing to list it. Check on ebay current for prices.

Since its got alot of miles on it if you do sell the cat I would clean it before shipping it. Its probably partially clogged. I have never done cleaning of that cat so someone will be along to tell you how to do that. Its easy and cheap.

NPB battery is probably worth around $800 if its in nice no corroded buss bar shape.

I would call around to junk yards tell them you got a Prius all the body parts are intact got its engine and trans it rolls good but the dash is gutted. How much can you give me for junk you pick it up. In Florida it would be around $500 for instance they tow it away.

Then you go and strip all the ecu's out of the dash there's many and the mfd and the radio and the combo meter dash and both inside and outside fuse blocks. They will all go on ebay. Good market for all that stuff there's a ton of G2's still out there. Its relatively easy and fast.

My wife is from Maine was an RN for 20 years @ Maine Medical. Her nephew owns the biggest roofing company in Portland. Her brother lives in Brooks. I'm from Vermont we love it up there. When we vacation that's where we go our best friends live in Raymond NH.

    Good Luck!!

This red sawzall blades that I'm using now make short work of that crap I can cut the front end off of a generation 2 in like no time It's faster than a blowtorch which I also have here It's just slices do that frame metal like butter one blade will do almost all the cuts Even cutting the car in half after the doors are off slicing through the roof center posts rocker panels like butter that's like no steel. But yeah it's more work than most would want to take on I'm sure but like in the fall when it's not hot out I've got one out here I got to do maybe I'll video it too funny.

I have recycled several cars in retirement, from a 26 foot GMC motorhome to a subaru outback. All with a 25 year old sawzall and a 20 dollar HF die grinder. Some of the carnage IMG_20180816_155359_964.jpg IMG_20180816_155359_965.jpg IMG_20180816_155359_966.jpg

Thank you sir that is correct I'm glad you can get pictures to post here easily That's exactly right I'm using some Diablo super thick metal blades that will go through that frame steel almost as quick as a torch and make a bunch of cuts before I replace the $12 blade or whatever it is thanks for those pictures big guy looking good over there where are you?

I am in Chalfont, PA. Yes the car is a '99 Legacy GT belonging to my daughter. We had a string of Subys, still have a Baja turbo and 08 legacy. But I am losing that itch thanks to a total motor rebuild on the baja and a love for my prius that is more reliable and uses half the gas. And no more 4 cam timing belt jobs!
