Ford & GM adopt the Tesla Supercharger network standard (NACS).

    I was surprised when Ford adopted Tesla’s NACS (another case of choosing a poor name IMO).
    GM announcing, just a few days later, that they were also adopting NACS floored me.

    Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled at this news, and think it will, in the long run, help speed the transition to electric vehicles (in the USA).

    I am curious what others think about this.
    Do you think Tesla is in talks with other manufacturers to bring them onboard?

    I see many others joining this, in the USA. In regard to Toyota, I really don’t know though.
    Will they stick to their guns, and not join this new coalition?
    Can they afford to give Tesla, Ford & GM such an advantage for their BEVs?

    Or, will they join once more manufacturers also join in?

    Or, am I wrong and Toyota will make an announcement Monday:eek:

    Aptera prototypes were using NACS. If production happens, those will likely have it too.

    Toyota? If they are still focused more on China, they won't join NACS until not doing so is big disadvantage. Having access to more chargers will also be blunted if they stick to their current charge rates. Then it's possible Tesla can have minimum charging performance criteria to ease congestion at chargers.

    With Honda's upcoming EVs being GM based, they might have NACS.

    Excellent points.
    For example, if Toyota is selling 1 Million BEVs a year in China and 10,000 a year in the USA, why go to any trouble.

    I'd be very curious to see what each party is offering in these agreements :)

    A Tesla owner, I was initially worried that these a charging network my higher purchase price had paid for was going to be diluted by charging stall hogs. Too many of these Fords and GMs have charging ports placed where the block at least two cha rging stalls. But I'm more accepting today.

    The newer Tesla V4 chargers have a longer cable and built-in adapter. Better charging stall designs that have 'deeper' lanes makes my access better as I've had at least two occasions where to wheel curbs in the lane almost kept my car from being charged. Furthermore, it is an 'in your face' advertisement of Tesla products that even the most rabid anti-Elon owners can't ignore. Then Tesla plugs are great for smaller statue people who are often female.

    I've used the overly expensive, under reliable, and heavy CCS-1 plugs before and they are not fun. So getting a better engineered charging network makes a lot of sense for everyone.

    Tesla does not have to make every 'style' of EV so let the smart ones use the Tesla solution. It will be better for everyone in the long run.

    The first Aptera company ended in 2011. I remember they had to destroy the prototypes back then. The founders got back together and started a new company, Aptera Motors, in 2019. It might be a continuous 10 years.

    IMHO I see similarities between this merger to Charging connector to the USB C standardization................and a stretch to what the PGA and LIV Golf merger......interesting business decisions.....hopefully with the consumer in mind. (and obviously money is first)

    What is required for the switch to occur? Is it an adapter, software for the car, an app, hardware ???? Interested in what happens to all the current cars out there who aren't on the Tesla charges now.

    According to Ford and GM, they will have adapters in 2024. The vehicles will be outfit with the NACS plugs starting in 2025.

    I noticed our 3yr old 401k conversion into $20K of roth Tesla stock jumped upward at the notification Ford & GM are on board with the Tesla charging format. No complaints here

    they're almost forced to join now as cities/states/feds require it more and more. there won't be any public chargers for them otherwise

    I am anxious to see more of Mercedes EV’s. We looked at a 5 seater and it has a definite luxury feel to it. Very nice indeed. The largest trouble with Tesla is that for 7 seats you need to go Model X and for the price tag… it was simpler to go to a gasser GL550 with 15K miles on it for $37k. $50k will buy a LOT of Gas…oh and a used M3 for me. and with the adoption of the Tesla connector I’m planning on installing a L2 charger in my house and just leaving it when we sell. Future owners would appreciate it.

    You can get a Model Y with 7 seats. No idea how functional the two back rows would be. I vaguely recall seeing a special promotion on the 7 seat version.
