Hey everyone! Scoured the forums here trying to find a similiar thing, can't seem to find a similiar situation.

My Prius (2006/240k miles) had a check engine light and a red car with an exclamation point through it come on. At that point the hybrid battery wouldnt hold a charge. I had a buddy come and attempt to read some codes from it and nothing would come up, brought it to oreillys as well and did not have any codes come up. My buddy cleared any codes anyway, which at that point the two lights went off and the car ran fine, generating and holding a charge.

Fast forward to 5 days later and the same warning light of the car with an exclamation point came on but no check engine light this time. Same thing, battery wouldn't charge while driving. At this point I heard the fan from the hybrid battery come on ( first time being able to hear it kick on). The car itself is running fine and the warning light went away on its own but it still wont go past 2 bars of a charge and the acceleration is suffering.

The 12v battery was replaced about a week ago (the problem started exactly a week after install) oil was recently changed, hybrid battery was replaced with a brand new (not refurbed) battery about 9 months ago.

Can't get the local garage near me to help as they aren't reading any codes, therefore they wont help without some serious investment. It also doesn't help that the actual warning light seems to go on and off at random times.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I do not really have the funds to get a whole new car. Thanks everyone!

Seems like you have a failing hybrid battery, needs a replacement.

you can try force charging it as a temporary band aid. Put it in drive and hold the brake down with your left foot. Fully depress the accelerator with your foot, this will force charge the battery until full. Repeat this a few times (drain it by letting the AC run on high). Force charge when it gets low.

This is just a band aid to buy you time to save money for another battery

Sounds like you may have a failing inverter pump Do you know where that is You know it's supposed to be running when you like open the door to the chiropractically anyway turn the car on get out open the jug next to the silver hybrid synergy drive inverter with the writing on top of it Do you see the coolant moving Is the coolant that the full mark there's a pump right behind the headlight of the driver side It's on a gold bracket put your hand on it Do you feel it vibrating see the two hoses coming in and out of it squeeze them You hear the pump change tune when you squeeze the hose? If the reservoir is a little low top it off If you don't see coolant moving in the jug that is a good possibility that is a problem that'll let your inverter get hot and then it throttles back or doesn't charge the HV battery maybe have a look good luck.

It could be the inverter water pump OR one of many other things that is triggering the warning lights(trouble codes). You need to get the trouble codes read. Most scan tools can not communicate with all of the 12 or more ECUs in the car. You need a better mechanic or a Toyota dealership to retrieve the trouble codes.

If you want to DIY, you can buy a good scan tool like the Autel Maxi AP200 as reviewed in the thread linked below.

Who replaced the HV battery, and was it an OEM battery?

    Welcome to PriusChat!!
A new OEM battery installed by a toyota dealer gives you have a three (3) year warranty. If OEM and otherwise, then only one (1) year.

FYI : you're moderated until you've posted five (5) times.

I just replaced My HV battery about 11 months ago. Was about 1488 ordered online through the largest Toyota dealer in my area to get the online price you've got to order online or you get charged retail almost double this is me picking it up at the parts department dropping off my old battery and taking the new but it had to be ordered online as the catch to get the lower price.

Attempted this today, the car is not accelerating and the "flow chart"? I think that is the proper term, for when it is supplying charge for the battery has no arrows. Not sure if that is normal and I should of kept going or not but it does not seem to be charging it at all.

I do have a 3 year warranty on the hybrid battery so if it comes down to it, I will be able to replace it. Had the idea that it wasn't the battery possibly so wanted to cover any bases before I put in the claim.

Will try this today and post back, thank you!

Thanks everyone for your responses! Will report back after I try a few of the potential solutions.

So the coolant is flowing inside the reservoir and I can feel the pump going. Right now the car is running perfectly fine and charged up to full a couple minutes after coasting while driving it. That is where it is kind of annoying as sometimes it runs great, sometimes the battery wont charge.

Ty for the advice, glad I can scratch out another potential problem. Seems to be getting closer and closer to a problem with the battery itself.

That $1488 price was a one-off special price not likely to be repeated, Tom lucked out there.

I thought some guy just said he paid similar to that not too long ago maybe it was 16 or 18 but anyway that was the price when the pandemic started at Rick Hendrick Chevrolet I don't know much else I don't know if it went up during the pandemic maybe after because I think I checked I don't know a year into the pandemic when all the crap was on the fan. And they told me the salesman at the parts department do the same thing again Mr deramus and everything should be good and then I went and got the battery from the hybrid doctor in Virginia instead for like $700 and that battery still running top-notch driven everyday and back and forth to work.

if your battery is not charging, then you have some major issues going on. MG1 and MG2 in the transaxle responsible for your lack of charging to the hybrid battery. You will definitely have codes for this type of failure.
