I believe it was, the cooler was solid packed, took 3 days to get it flowing completely.
Maybe the pic can tell if you see a different head gasket. It probably was changed. NYC cab co's usually change the oil every 2 weeks.
Could not believe the oil that accumulated in the bottom of the intake. Changed the PCV while I was doing this. Next is the MAF, to see if that gets the check engine light out.

I started making a list of torque values, trying to include everything significant in a head gasket job. This is what I've got so far, fairly complete I think. It could use "fresh sets of eyes", a look over for anything else worth adding. If I revise it, due to the limitted post-editting window, I'll just post it again, with revisions.

I tried to reduce illustrations (cribbed from Repair Manual) to bare minimum, haven't even included head bolt torque pattern, relying on simple description instead. Maybe I should though not sure. The timing chain cover is one that I just hit the wall, impossible to explain without illustration.

Updated pdf, added right engine mount bracket bolt torque value (70 foot/pounds), and related illustration. Not clear on the pic and the intent, but it's in there. These are the bolts that hold the engine mount to the car body. I'm not sure this needs to be removed, but I do see in the latest video I posted up above, he does have that whole bracket off.

Is there a list of the parts needed?
For example, Should water pump be replaced?

If I was doing head gasket replacement, I'd probably go with the Toyota gasket kit (includes head gasket, and most everything else pliable, new head bolts (old ones likely reusable, there are checks spec'd in the Repair Manual, but just so I can sleep at night). Water pump and thermostat would be good to replace: they seem to be failing around 150~200K, so...

But this is using the original head gasket that is notorious for failing, routinely, almost on a schedule.

Wouldn't it be better, while you're doing all this work, to at least get a head gasket that claims to be an improvement over the original?

I know I wouldn't use the same dang design that got me to this repair in the first place. (Fool me once,,,,,)

If you were selling head gaskets, would you not claim yours were improvements over the original?

    Good point.

You should give the original design a second chance.

    I agree with you guys.(n)

The current Toyota hg for gen3 is different from the original with a wider sealing layer on the metal gasket. Toyota tried several changes along the way including pistons, rings, intake manifolds and egr algorithms. All implemented by 2015 and carried through 2017 in the v. We still see hg fails without overheating in the revised gen3s.

Gen4 1.8s were significantly different in cylinder coolant passages and use of cylinder wall insulators. Along with combustion chamber and egr system flow improvements. Now overheating is the only concern.

The real answer is to say the EGR system needs maintenance after 150k. Then everybody would quit blowing up. HG is fine. They just don't want to admit it for some reason.

Are they actually claiming an improvement over the original?

On their product page they list some things that their gasket supposedly does, but I don't see anything there suggesting that the OEM gasket does not do those very same things or that the OEM gasket does them worse.

Only I'm not giving the OEM a second chance.
"Fool me once.... and ahhh,,, you'll never get fooled again", isn't that how the saying goes?

When that fateful day comes and my HG fails right on schedule,,,
I'll be going with an American made replacement from a company that specializes in gaskets.

If one was committed to the position that a product is better because it is made in America, I suspect they might experience at least a little cognitive dissonance from their (repeated) purchase of Japanese vehicles.

Seemed more like that first question was about how best to interpret marketing claims, and not taking a position on the original head gasket, and like the second question was about making sure what the marketing claims even really do say, and not taking a position on the original head gasket.

But if you'd rather turn them both into opinions on the original head gasket, carry on.

What seems funny to me is when one complaining an engine head gasket is notorious at failing @ 150~200K miles..

Exactly how many miles does one expect any vehicle to last without any mechanical issue?

I don't think Toyota head gasket is at fault, it consistently last 200K or more.. To me, it may seem to be an issue because of the amount of vehicle has been sold worldwide. And base on a percentage of failure of that amount is obviously be a larger number...

Just to be fair and based on my recollection, felpro revised head gasket for Gen 3 Prius claim to have better tolerance then Toyota OEM. And I have been using both, and felpro kit is no where near as a complete kit as Toyota OEM...
As for head gasket, I use Felpro when a head measure out slightly wrapped because of claimed tolerance thickness is better the OEM....

Or it might be plain old experience.
I've had many japanese made vehicles over the years. All of them had very high miles. One well beyond 300k miles, it was brand H.
The Gen3 is the only one I know of that you can count on this failure.
    Carry on.
    This is correct.
    We all have our opinions.
The only way to settle this is to have a study where Gen 3's have the HG replaced with both brands of HG.
Then have identical coolant changes and EGR cleanings and lucky dances around the car, whatever, and then sit back and wait for the data.
    Carry on.

It sounds like you service Prius. Is this a business? Have you really seen Gen 3's go 200k without the dreaded HG failure?
    I and friends have not.
Sorry, I've had many cars go beyond '200k miles' without a major engine failure. (Brand H and Brand S)
I believe there is a problem with the Gen 3.

Once again, testing of both HG's are required to settle this difference of opinions.
If you are in the business, you are in a position to do this testing.
It will take a long time, correct?
We already have lots of data on the OEM HG.
How can one be a fan of the OEM with its horrible record?
I will not get fooled again.
    Carry on.

I have a hunch, that maintaining the EGR system on ours, the head gasket may be late for that "dreaded", "right on schedule" failure. Threw in an oil catch can for good measure.

    Right.(y)
We all have our 'hunches' and 'beliefs'.
Then we go on and on about them here on forums.
    Carry on.

I have a 'belief' that deleting the EGR is as effective to HG life as religiously cleaning the EGR system every (?) 50k miles.
And there's only one way to prove it. (I haven't acted on this belief, yet.)

I wish there was a way to gather data from a forum such as this.
