I am a new Prius owner (just bought an 08 yesterday for my daughter). It came with the roof rack pictured, but with no keys! I know nothing about roof racks and I cannot find Google/YouTube content that looks like this particular type. How to I unlock and remove this without a key? I expected to see the key number on the outside of the lock similar to a file cabinet but no such luck. Any help would be appreciated.

I mean I don't know if you're trying to save the rack to sell it on eBay or what But running by a locksmith that will cost like $20 unless he's a real nice person or something along those lines you live in a super expensive market where nobody can pick their butt for less than $50 then that's what you pay If I was closer to you I can walk up to that rack with my tools my locksmithing tools and have it off in seconds generally speaking The numbers are probably on the keys which are well God knows where generally I keep my rack keys in the car glove box so that wherever the car goes some human being is capable of dealing with the rack. They don't do any good if the keys are in Colorado and I'm in North Carolina dealing with the car right? But some folks this is where we are. But a locksmith or a person on craigslist that is a locksmith that's now not working so much that will take seconds seriously. So there's no way the keys are with the vehicle or the human you bought the car from has a clue? Pretty sad but typical I guess in this day and age.

REI to the rescue. There was one close to me (never been there) and they had an entire master key ring full of keys. He unlocked the whole thing for me and gave me the key core numbers at no charge! Not sure if I'll ever use it but at least I could order some ebay keys if I ever wanted to.

Yeah usually when they pull the cylinders out you can get the numbers and write them down or they gave them to you that was a good move rei was a big seller of these racks.

I told my wife I wouldn't be stealing the Declaration of Independence any time soon . I tried unsuccessfully picking the locks with some paperclips I saw on videos I found on YouTube before giving up and driving to REI.

A lot of guys would have just ripped the lock cylinders out with a slide hammer like you do in a car just because the REI thing was a good lick It would have taken me a minute to think of that too but they were big sellers of all that stuff and there you go My locksmith buddy has the same setup He's got tons of keys that fit Yakima Thule and and off-brands made by others.
