We bought our 2008 Prius new and have over 200K miles on it without one single issue before today. My wife drove up to LA today and got the dreaded triangle of death. She pulled off the freeway into a Jiffy Lube, where I asked them if they could plug in the computer diagnostic. They said the main battery is going bad. She continued driving and said the AC shut down. She made it to her destination but I am worried if the car can be driven home safely? We live about 50 miles away. Can the battery shut down the whole car? Braking? Steering? Or if it starts, should she be able to drive it back home?

Once we get it back home, we're not sure what to do. This couldn't have come at a worse time. Covid destroyed our business and we are suffering financially with zero income. Anything we do will have to go on the credit cards.

Before this happened, we were hoping a new job situation would allow us to get into a newer Prius. This has been the best car we've ever owned but it has seen better days.

    What are our options?

I know better than to go to the dealer, especially here in SoCal, where prices on everything is much higher than average. Neither one of us are DIY people or mechanically inclined.

Do I look for a battery online, then look for an independent mechanic to install OR should I just try to find the right shop, who might have access to cheaper battery options?

Reading other threads here I saw talk about replacing individual cells or modules. Is that something I should look into?

Can anyone recommend someone reliable here in Orange County, CA who might be able to help us get this done cheaper?

Again, just a bit overwhelmed and looking for help, ideas and options. Thank you!

Just for giggles, I called the Toyota dealer nearest me and was quoted "just under $4K" for the battery. That sounds absurd to me. They didn't mention labor, so I'm not sure if that quote was for part or part and labor. Either way, that price is not an option for me, so I will be looking elsewhere for help.

Try Earthling Automotive (previous Luscious Garage) or Hybrid 911 Prius??

$4k sounds about right (mostly due to covid inflation. Pre-covid, I think it was around $2k before labour).

Replacing it with a brand new battery essentially is like getting a new Gen 2 (since the engine would be relatively newer than the mileage would suggest). I understand that finances are tight due to covid so yes I would suggest having the battery looked at to see if individual cells or pack modules can be replaced.

It is still less than $2K before labor - if you shop some. The main Toyota parts site is hopelessly broken. It used to allow looking up a part and then it would list all the local dealers and by clicking through them one at a time the lowest price could be found. Nowadays it returns NOTHING when entering the part number for the pack. When it does find something it only lists a small subset of the local dealers. In my case it never lists Longo, by far the biggest dealer in the area. So, just to prove the point, looking at Longo Toyota's part site one finds:

    https://parts.longotoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-drive-motor-battery-pack-g951047031

    for $1744 with a $1350 core charge.

The OP is in Orange county, try a few of the dealers down there. The prices tend to roughly correlate with the wealth of a community, and most of the OC is pretty well to do. Anyway, a part from Tustin is likely to cost less than one from Newport Beach.

Thanks! I will try searching online. I live in Orange County but will gladly drive to LA or San Diego or wherever to save $2K.

Can you explain what "core charge" is?

Thanks for the tips! Hopefully I can find someone reliable and reasonable to check it out. It's not easy in the area we live.

You live in the same region as Dr. Prius who has a Lithium upgrade battery pack that improves MPG and AC performance. They have mobile installers in your area and if you buy with my affiliate link I can offer you unlimited tech support: https://projectlithium.com/?ref=9qLPw

Thanks @PriusCamper I've been reading your comments in other threads as well. These batteries look super cool!! A nice upgrade indeed. We weren't really planning to keep this car much longer (was hoping to be able to get a newer model), so I'm a bit torn about spending a bunch of money on it. Gotta give it some thought. The lithium option would definitely max out our credit cards. Is the mobile install an additional cost or included in that price? Thanks again.

I recommend you call Electron Automotive in Orange.

They were very willing and able to help me. Be direct and honest. Say you want a brand new original HV bat for your car. They may not be the cheapest but they are knowledgeable.
Don’t get a reconditioned bat or try changing modules yourself. These cars are very complex.
Also the reality is that at your cars age and mileage other stuff will also start failing. It’s ugly but just the way it is.

Work hard and be honest and you will make money. A lot of people need good help and are tired of entitled jerks with an inflated sense of their worth.

    Good luck.

PS generally you can limp around in a Prius with the problems you describe, but it’s by no means reliable.

I believe that's the "battery deposit" and the dealer gets it back if they return the used hybrid battery they took out of the customer's car to Toyota for recycling.

My wife made it back from LA, although the AC and some other items stopped working in 100 degree heat. I'm weighing options now versus our budget. Appreciate all the help and feedback.

The main advantages of one of these packs is you'll be able to use it on your next Prius too... They work in all Gen3 and also in the non-lithium Gen4. The most money-saving way this would work would be finding one of the many Prius that had a catalytic converter stolen and then sat for so long the battery pack went bad and then the owner just writes off the loss and sells it for super cheap, then you put in your Nexcell pack and away you go.

Also DIY install via yourself or friend or family member is the way to go because most shops charge up into $400 range for a lousy less than 3 hours of install time. And yes DIY takes way longer than a few hours if you're doing it for the first time, but when your next Prius comes along for an amazing price you'll know how to swap battery packs.

Given where you live and current situation I personally would buy a Project Lithium battery and hire @PriusCamper to install it for you. (can you drive up north?) That would be your best bet. The Gen2 is a great car. (I have 2 and love them.) For a time versus money situation...If you have time you can use your Prius to deliver....Amazon, Grubhub, Door Dash,...markets may vary but you should be able to make at least $100 a day in your spare time. $500 a week or $2,000 a month if you hustle and your new battery and the credit card bill is paid OFF. I used this trick during COvid to get ahead and pay off debt while working 2 jobs.

Thanks for the kind words, but I'm in the Seattle area and a drive to LA area is only a couple hours less than a drive to Colorado, so I'm most likely not available to do the job unless I could line up other jobs along the way.

Well, I was referred to a local mechanic who specializes in Prius and hybrids. He's been in business a long time, very small shop with a lot of good references. I drove the Prius with no AC to his shop in 100 degree heat. I asked him to do a deep diagnostic and check everything out. I left the car there. He just called me and told me the problem is NOT the battery. He said the DC converter needs to be replaced. Since I am strapped for cash, he recommended a refurb with a 2 year warranty. He assured me this would resolve the issue. Normally I would get a couple opinions, but I can't spend another minute in that car without AC in this heat, so I really can't take it anywhere else. He seemed like a straight shooter and was highly recommended so hopefully that's it. It's much cheaper than any battery replacement and hopefully it will get me down the road a while, until finances get better. Thanks to all. Fingers crossed.

Glad to hear you are back on the road. Once you pay off that bill start saving for a new hybrid battery. Set aside $2500 and watch a lot of DIY videos on you tube. Jack does a great job at explaining it and it takes time but is not that hard. Or research someone in your area who can install it for you. If you budget and save now you will be prepared when it does finally die.

Good advice. Since it's a 2008, I'm guessing the battery is already at the end of it's life span.

Although the battery turned out to be a false alarm, I'm glad I found this forum. I've gotten great advice and have learned a lot reading through threads here.

    What are the error codes?

I'm not buying it... Too many of us who thought it was a bad inverter on a Gen2 Prius realized later on that it was the hybrid battery not the inverter. We all have a spare inverter sitting on our parts rack for years that no one ever wants or needs because of it.

If I were you, I'd get in writing how much of the repair cost the mechanic promises to reimburse/put towards the real repair once he realizes that there was nothing wrong with the inverter.
