So, I've got a 2010 Prius that makes a very brief grinding/Scraping noise in the left front wheel area.

Only really happens at around 80-85mph on the highway when I hit a bump (like the road transitioning to a bridge, pothole, etc.) or even just a dip in the road. The sound is very brief, like a half second, just for the duration of the bump or dip.

Otherwise I never hear or have any issues. No weird sounds turning at low speeds, no sounds going over bumps at low speeds. The shocks are good enough, for a Prius, not blown out.

I jacked the car up and tried wiggling the tire left/right, up/down, but I didn't really feel any play like it was a bad bearing.

However, I'm leaning towards it being the bearing. Not sure what else it'd be with this type of sound.

Scraping or grinding of a front wheel bearing that would be getting close to failure should be a lot of heat generated but if it's only doing it on these transitions well you need to get a road with a lot of transitions and go over it pretty quickly and see if one size heating up more than the others One way to try to skin it You sure it's not a fender line or a piece of plastic something that can blow against the tire just for an instant when things are not stable? I mean I've got 300,000 mi on Gen 3 wheel bearings on a persona that's woman driven by a woman that's like Mr Magoo sight-wise that's an old cartoon from the '60s she runs into anything skunks or possums you name it has to be about deer size for her to see it and then usually it's even too late and her car has the original wheel bearings 300K and the car drives like almost brand new minus the few pieces of plastic she's missing no kidding doesn't make any kind of rolling noise so there's always that kind of thing. Course it still could be I'm just saying these wheel bearings generally speaking seem to be pretty stout the original ones.

Watching with interest; my 2010 started doing the same thing around a year ago. (I don't have to be doing 80–85, or I wouldn't have noticed. Also, mine sounds more like the rear.)

I looked, of course, for any kind of junk lodged in the wheel wells that the top of the tire might be scraping when it pushes up, but I didn't find any.

How many miles on it and have you replaced any worn suspensions like shocks, swaybar links, tie rods, etc?

So what happens if you jack up the car OP put it on jack stands and have your wife or your son or your friend step on the gas in gear 85 mph and just let off of it and do that a couple of times It's the front wheels making any noise under those conditions I realize the suspensions not loaded usually wheel bearings will go to ticking they could scrape I guess if they've been pounded on well enough. And turning them backwards a lot of times will make them make noise unloaded and things like that going the wrong direction but you could do with your hand or put it in reverse and gun it just let off of it just the letting off of it let the drive axle transmission let go of the drive axle that instantaneous release of power or torque or whatever usually will allow any movement and funny business that's going on to kind of happen now if it's related to bouncing up and down obviously this is not probably going to do any good. But wheel bearings generally don't need a lot of bouncing up and down once they start going bad they start making noises and groaning and things like that ticking pretty regular matter of fact a lot of times when they're down on the ground under load you may not hear it a lot of videos I see the guy jacks the car up goes to spinning the wheel and then you hear it lot of times I even notice they're spending the tire backwards and you get that light scraped dick dick dick kind of like metal is heating up kicking like a radiator or pipes going to a radiator and an old house in New England would kind of make or the newer baseboard radiators that kind of tick when the pipes and fins are getting hot.

Those cheap sheet metal brake covers is the #1 suspect for noises like this... Try bending it/adjusting it and I bet it goes away. You might also look into the heat shielding for the exhaust system.
