Check engine light on and pulled codes. First one is for the egr vacuum solenoid but from what I have been reading the gen 2 has no egr system. What else could it be? The symptoms are the same as what it states- surging and rough idle. I also think it may be having issues with catalytic converter- I can smell the exhaust fumes when driving at times- but I’m not that familiar with this car I’ve only had it for a month. I replaced the spark plugs a few weeks ago. Any ideas?

That vacuum switching valve or VSV is a common problem on my sienna van they go bad pretty regularly because where it's located is close to the ground it gets corroded and sticks doesn't open and close and sets the light I didn't realize this could be a thing in the generation too Prius but apparently it can be It's a pretty simple little vacuum switching valves that you can buy for $14 to $35 or somewhere in that range and then that should turn the code off for that and allow that VSV to open and close like it's supposed to. The catalytic converter you're at the right mileage to be getting the code for the cat being below threshold. That's something you can chase around for a while The factory catalytic converter is pretty .costly.. And many people don't want to spend that kind of money on this old of a car. I live in a state where we don't have that type of inspection so I'm good.

First idea - you could have a faulty ignition coil causing a misfire. Idea 2 - you could have installed a bad spark plug - always a possibility if you got plugs from somewhere on the web. Or something else wrong with the engine.

The P0446 is an evaporative emissions code and really shouldn't have much affect on engine operation.

Have you disconnected/installed/played with the 12v battery recently, or cleaned up the MAF sensor?
