Hey guys, I was reinstalling the intake manifold after cleaning and broke one of the two nut mounts (see photo). Was attempting to torque to 21 ft. lbs per instructions and was not there yet.

What do I do now? Is there any way to replace that mount? Can I drive the car without that nut? Any tips deeply appreciated.

car is 2010 Prius, with 198k miles. This is my first crack at cleaning the intake manifold.

Looks like there is plenty of that stud left to grab with vise grips and take it out and put a new one in. Double check that torque; I haven't got the manual handy here.

Spray it first with some Aerokroil It's in an orange spray can you can get it at Napa now It's quite expensive but it is the stuff. Just give it a little shot and see if it'll soak in around that stud and then like chap says put a small pair of vice grips and clamp them down good stand to the side and push to the left to loosen it and then you'll put in a new one that you can buy at the Toyota dealer that's the easiest way to go about that or if you have another head you could try and take it out but I would say get a new one Do not lock tight it in I would say snug up by hand and a little umph and leave it. There must have been a burr or something on one of the threads maybe it got caught and caused the breakage who knows but on a plastic intake manifold you don't need to be whopping the bolts down too tough probably half that torque spec would be fine.

Now that the tornado warning is over I can see in the manual again. Sure enough, it really did say 21 ft lbf.

2nd time in a week somebody has posted about snapped bolts on a Prius engine... This is very rare... Maybe it's the full moon making people stronger than they thought they were? Or making bolts weaker than they're supposed to be?

Specified torque is with new gasket i presume. I used new gasket and just gut feeling for the torque. Seemed to be fine

Somewhere in Tombukt2's paragraph there might have been something about a burr or the nut getting hung up on the threads, so all the torque could've been on the stud before the nut face was clamped down on the manifold. That could be plausible to me; I'm sure the specified torque is for when the nut is run smoothly all the way down and doing its clamping job.

Just posted my experience to other thread about same bolts. They seems pretty strong. At least when new. I definitely gave more than 21ft lb when trying to get egr valve bolt further in. They are probably same bolts

The EGR fasteners are all less than 21, 15 IIRC, for the main ones, maybe 7 for studs. See first link in my signature, it has repair manual excerpts with the torque specs.

Same bolt can be use for various applications with different torques.

Don't the ones on the manifold take a 12 mm socket, and the EGR ones a 10 mm?

Haven't been out there looking lately.
