Faulty dashboard. Flashing and weird.

    Hello Prius World,
    I’m having some weird issues. At first, I thought it was a bad 12v aux battery, which was replaced with a battery from Toyota. The issue got worst. The dash or car will sometimes act like it’s restarting, just the display that is, and then the gauges kind of work, but the Speedo will only display KMH. I’m stumped. If anyone’s had seen this, what’s your solution. I’ve tested fuses for continuity with a meter. Everything seems fine.

    You need to check all fuses in the car. Seems like there's some kind of a communication problem there are computers that handle that in the car gateway computer a multiplexing computer etc that you will need to get into the manual and get some troubleshooting from the electronic section for that display does the car display gas and kilometers per hour when you drive?

    check the negative to ground connection. any chance of rodents?

    I did clean the terminals with a battery brush, and used small stainless brush in the side that connects to the chassis. As far as rodents, I’m in Chicago. Car is street parked. So it’s not out of the questions.

    I actually did see this post. I went and tested out my old batter which was original to the car ( 10 years old) and it was at 11.9v. So this is a new battery which sits at about 12.8 before turning on the car. I tried cleaning the area and even added an additional ground to the battery to see if that would help. No luck. I accidental started another post that in gotta take down. Someone mentioned rodents on that post.. I’ll check the main wiring next to the firewall and then proceeded to check behind drivers dash and behind the two glove boxes. Hopefully I find something there that gives me clues. If I don’t see something, I’ll be taking it in for diagnostic at Toyota.

    The car will almost “restart” for lack of better words. The speedo nor gas gauge will work when driving: then out of nowhere, the Prius symbol pops up, the one you see when you start the car… then gas gauge, Speedo, and odometer work. But odometer is stuck on KMH and no matter what trip setting I’m in or hybrid monitor screen, the mph/kmh button will not switch it back to MPH. It stays at KMH. There’s gotta be something loose or not working right.

    Nothing done to the car recently? Someone once experienced problems after getting windshield tinted or dashboard detailed, can't remember which it was.

    However, it was due to liquid getting into the electronics in the dashboard.

    That 12 volt getting down to 11.8 volts while the cars ready or running is a clue It should be about 12 5 at rest for an AGM battery of this size and quality. And then when you ready the car it should take that 12 volts to 13.8 to 14.5 somewhere in that range just sitting there ready voltmeter on top of the battery terminals showing 11/8 while the car is running is too low maybe the inverter is not charging the battery correctly the 12 volt they might call that the inverter converter not working The inverter is not converting the 244 volts to the required 13.8 to 14.5 charging volts needed for the 12 volt battery this has been a problem in some of these cars.

    The only thing that happened to the car was a stolen cat. That’s was about a year ago. Windshield was replaced 4 years ago. Doubt any of this would reflect it now.

    that was the old battery with the 11.8. New battery sits well at 12.7-12.8 while the car is off. It gets up to 14.1 when the car is on ( Ready). The battery is from a Toyota dealership. The dash was doing weird things before the battery was replaced. As a read other posts, I was suggested a new 12v which in a lot of cases, would have fixed this issue.

    Then if that's the case you're going to be downloading a portion of the electrical part of the manual that deals with testing the combination meter display whatever they call it these days It will be lengthy. You will also need some test leads that will allow you access to those little tiny pins to take readings off of back probing them is not really a thing they're just a small back there so you're nicest leads aren't going to be small enough they must make a special set of test leads for these little tiny plugs or I'm sure there's some adapters people rig up something about the size of a paperclip but smaller but that will get cumbersome but taking them in and out of each space you need to test and all that. I usually read over the process first and look at the end n g n g And what the final end-all be all is it has to be done and it'll be one or two computer pieces The multiplexing computer and the gateway or something like that. If I don't see any wiring that looks fubar messed with then I go to a junk car and I get those two pieces and swap them one at a time and see if it makes any changes usually at that leg of the journey that's what's needed.
