I’ve tried ToyotaPartsDeal and one other vendor to order this and the orders get cancelled because the part has been “discontinued”.

Is there a place to get the 28800-21171
    battery?

This is just a standard battery from Toyota, I'm sure they are available. Maybe they have an updated part.

Best to call the parts department and ask them for a part for your specific car. They can give you the status. I can't imagine they would not have a 12v battery for a Prius

I don't know just ask the parts counter by calling Toyota and get the part number that they're going to sell you then you looked that up online to get the deal and then you pick it up like you're supposed to I don't know about the Toyota part number and the discontinued business. I buy mine from AutoZone Walmart O'Reilly's Menards they all have them AGM or regular type whatever you want to do shouldn't be an issue anywhere for the most part matter of fact I just picked one up yesterday for a car I'm working on 550 cold cranking amp AGM I don't know 160 bucks or something

That's the 12 volt I just looked it up they say they haven't for $199 by the time you get done with taxes and whatever other nonsense goes on it'd be about 2:30 and that's what I just paid or a little less than that it AutoZone or O'Reilly's or someplace I mean like day before yesterday. And I think you can stuff a 151 r in there that's a Walmart battery I believe it's the same size I think it'll work in a pinch the whole down strap might not be correct or something but.

Try part # 2880021170 or just go to the dealer.

If Toyota doesn't have any at the moment, get an AGM in an S46B24R form factor from your local auto parts store.

    To provide some more information:

I called the dealer. For them to get the OEM Prius battery would be $450.

With hazardous shipping fee ordering this is about $275 from ToyotaPartsDeal. But they say it is discontinued. Seems strange.

Guess I’ll try some other vendors.

Entered your vehicle stats at Canadian Tire website (yeah I know); there’s a compatible battery, currently $285 CDN (about $214 USD). Try someone like Pep Boys in the States? FWIW that same battery was like around $210~220 CDN, say a couple of years back.

I’ve purchased CT’s compatible batteries before, and they’re not kidding, dimensions and specs are per OEM.

General PDP Template | Canadian Tire

The “only one left” warning likely only applies at my preferred CT outlet. And this is a ubiquitous car, lots of second gen’s on the road up here, so I’m sure they replenish.

It’s funny, that’s the battery I tried to order first. Then three days later “discontinued”.

So I see the 71 battery has superseded the 70 and I think, “oh that’s why they said it was discontinued” and order the 71. Three days later the email comes “The ordered part(s) have been discontinued (no longer available) and/or is backordered with no ETA date by the manufacture”

I just checked at my battery shop and they have a Varta AGM 46B24R for NZ$383 ($333.04 + 15% GST $49.96) which USD would be ~US$196.91 + taxes.

The main advantage of buying from a dealer is that the battery is guaranteed to be AGM, in the correct size, with JIS pencil posts, and the positive terminal on the right-hand side when viewed with the terminals closest to you.

If you purchase a third-party battery with a 46B24R form factor, you will be assured of the last three factors mentioned. Therefore, if you opt for an AGM in the 46B24R form factor, you can rest assured that it will be a good choice.

The S46B24R AGM battery is available at most NAPA stores, who also offer several types of discounts like Veteran, AAA, UPS etc.
Even Walmart now has an S46B24R AGM battery available on the shelf.
Batteries Plus also has S46B24R AGM batteries.

They're not nearly as hard to find as 5 years ago.

AutoZone, etc, are significantly more expensive than most places.

Thanks for all replies guys, an update:

I called a dealership outside of the Chicago area, they told me they have tons of this particular battery sitting on the shelf. $230. Picked it up today.

It seems Toyota of Lincoln Park quoted me the “get bent” price of $450 to get the battery.

This does not explain why several online Toyota parts distributors cancelled my order 3 days after placing with “part is discontinued”. So, something to think about.

And yes, I only want OEM. At a point in my life where I’d rather deal with purpose-built parts for this car, with a couple of exceptions.

I held that sentiment, then a time or two bought (and installed) Canadian Tire's battery for a few cars. The first was a Honda Civic, and when I set the old and new side-by-side, the case, lift handle, posts, everything but the label, looked identical. My impression: battery specs are very well ironed out, and if a third party (especially a very well-known, established place) says a battery is compatible, you can take that to the bank.

BTW: if you're doing the install, have a few washers and shim bits on hand. Toyota's hold-down bracket design is completely intolerant of any variation in height. Even a mm or two difference and the damn bracket will either have a gap, or be teetering.

Since your car was new, the "OEM" battery for it likely has been supplied by several different companies along the way.
That probably is part of the reason for the difficulty with the part number and availability.

There is nothing "purpose built" about a 12 V automotive battery.

I'll remember this thanks -- however since this battery is listed as a direct replacement for the Prius with SmartKey setup, I think it should be exact fit, no?

Yeah, I know, like Toyota spark plugs are just rebranded Densos, OEM struts are simply KYB, yeah... when I say "purpose built" I guess I mean that there is a level of quality associated with official Toyota parts, rebranded or not, that I would prefer to deal with in the complicated system of machines that is the Toyota Prius.

The cost of the battery was reasonable, I don't have to worry about fitment or quality (probably) and just one less thing on my mind. Also, 84 month warranty, pretty good
