Never have appreciated just in time manufacturing/delivery. It has to be weighed against events like this - which do happen with way too much frequency. Maybe call it "sometimes" just in time, & sometimes not.

especially these days. 13,000 cars a day, that will hurt considering the ongoing shortages

They reported they will be back up and running wednesday, which is pretty soon since it already wednesday in Japan.

JIT for semiconductors or batteries (hybrid and plug-in) doesn't make sense, but it does for most car parts. Most of the semiconducts can be used in multiple systems. The old system meant that you either produced cars no one wanted, or recycled extra parts. It sucks that 14 plants are down for a day, but that is better than producing a months worth of cars that sit on dealer lots.

Tesla and Toyota did a lot better during the supply chain disruptions than most auto manufacturers. Toyota Production system has to be continously modified, but it has worked to have toyota cutting waste and shifting to on demand vehicles.

They say that the 14 Japanese plants account for about 1/3 of world wide production. A days stoppage is bad but that is only about 0.1% of yearly global Toyota production.

I don't understand why they even need to still be building cars when all the Toyota stealerships no longer have any cars to sell? Every day more news comes out that makes it seem like Toyota has shut down, but many people who work for them don't know it yet.

    According to CNN:

The world’s biggest automaker by sales said that its 14 vehicle factories in the country had paused activity Tuesday because a system malfunction that began on Monday was preventing it from processing orders for automotive components.

Although claimed not to be a cyber attack ... hummmm.

Lol... Your chart is based on pre-pandemic production numbers from several years ago when they still actually used to build lots of cars.

Your reference says not a single thing about their multi-level layers of total incompetence to adapt and evolve in a rapidly changing industry.

They no longer sell the #1 selling car in the world. Their EV sales in China have tanked which is why they're considering shutting it down and their resistance to transition to EV was addressed by putting their PR department in charge of every aspect of fake EV production plans...

i'd like to see the n/a numbers. if supply is up and there are no cars on the lots, the feds will continue to raise interest rates.
and then there's all this talk about personal debt and repo's, but i'm not seeing it

I suspect in 5-10 years we'll have much more context to look back on all this and understand what failed and when for Toyota to be such a mess in so many ways right now. It's totally bizarre for one of their biggest markets in North America to no longer be selling hardly any cars and yet their PR department keeps acting like things have never been better. Lol... Something is terribly broken at Toyota corporate.

What do you mean with "selling hardly any cars"? Only GM seems to sell more passenger cars in the US.

For years on PriusChat people have been complaining about a massive lack of inventory at their Local Toyota Stealership. This has been a chronic problem in Canada and the US. Maybe that's too anecdotal and there's hard data that say otherwise, but we've yet to see it on here.
