Why is it always the amateur radio guys that fixate on details that have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the topic at hand?

I mean, I guess I spent about 8 or 9 seconds thinking about it in the 8 years I've owned that door... The previous owner even included the warranty booklet for the thing. It was apparently the way they made them in 1980, and I'm not quite old enough to question that.

The panels probably simply don't have a back side. If the space isn't going to be insulated, nor the interior need to be pretty, why wast the material?

    @Leadfoot J. McCoalroller ’s post reminded me:

Yesterday, on foot, we got our walk signal at a cross walk, commenced stepping off the curb, and some joker (hey I’m turning right) rolled the red light, just about…

Anyway, please remember what the rule book says about red lights, stop signs and white lines. Even when turning right.

YouTube ads are a necessary annoyance. There are ways to deal with the shorter ones ranging from MUTE, fixed remote key strokes, to advanced playback methods. But I really have a problem with Informational for bogus "health food" claims and 'Medicare' frauds.

Recently, my LG television had an update that allows direct access to YouTube without having to use my MacTV, my regular YouTube player. So now I start MacTV with the offensive ad running and then switch back to the LG channels. The advertising thieves get a full play and PAY without me.

Meanwhile I choose between either LG playing YouTubes or broadcast programs.

    I have ONE paid sub.
I grudgingly pay Alphabet $14.97 a month for the ability to 'load and go' Yoo-Tube content.
This allows me BOTH to load and go AND to LISTEN to YouTube content while I drive hither and thither and not use cellular data.
IOW, I'm able to close the screen on the phone while I drive and not lose the ability to listen to my content.

Oh....and I'm not nagged by commercials.
They don't really bother me - but not having to ignore them is a value add for my < $15/mo.

    YMMV

I had my last SubWay sandwich today.

They've been a guilty pleasure for a while. Terrible quality overall, but there was something about their veggie patty loaded up with even more veggies that would haul me in three or four times a year. So now I can say goodbye.

A few weeks ago, the chain was acquired by Roark Capital. This is pretty much the ultimate shame for a restaurant, the veritable pantheon of inedibles. 8th tier restaurants, the sorts of places you don't go unless the gas station is on fire and the vending machines are empty.

I thought we had three Subway restaurants in my 'city' of some 10,000 souls, but I was wrong.

    We have four.

I don't really have anything against their sandwiches or the chain, but for me it's the 'watermelon' of restaurants.
OK, I guess but by the time you decipher the 'thump' rule, haul the bloody thing home, figure out how to refrigerate it, manage to slice it without an unplanned trip to the ER, and deal with the seeds....and the rind, you could have actually GROWN something better.
    AND eaten it.
If there are more than four people in any given Subway, including yourself....and the two millennials you HOPE followed all of the sanitization rules correctly for their $12 an hour plus tip, then you're on a half-hour hunger strike while the person in front of you decides which of the 7 previously frozen, fresh bread options that they are going to have.

    No thanks.
I almost never go to any of those four places.

    Sadly.....
I can tell you almost to the minute when I will 'enjoy' my next Subway sandwich.

    I'm a poll worker.

No....not the girl who is "only doing it because she is working her way through med school" but the other kind.
Fortunately, I'm also not one of the unsung heroes who hands out the "I Voted!' stickers after checking IDs for 14 hours straight.
I sit on a board who opens and processes mail-in ballots and decides whether or they were properly cast, and in the case of non-scannable ballots we either hand count them or create certified duplicates - depending on the numbers involved.

Our County Clerk used to have access to a fund that feeds poll workers every election day, and they used to have healthy options like pizza and a deli spread worthy of the workers that it fed.

    Now?
Thanks to a combination of Covid, and the usual collection of buzz-kills that howled in protest because the caterer was the third cousin of the neighbor's dog groomer - or the horrible fact there was no vegan options, or they were gluten intolerant.........we get box lunches.

    ...from......Subway.

The other day I had one of my fellow board members hand me a box from the hundred or so that were stacked up by the jail trustees.....who politely declined to partake in our feast, stating that they had better options.

    "What kind do you want?"
    "What kind do they have???"
"Black Forest Ham and Roast Turkey...."

I told my co-worker to just hand me a box.
    It would taste the same.
The meat would just be a different shade of grey.......

I've read some speculation that Roark bought Subway to learn their secrets so they can take their Arby's, Dunkin', Carl's Jr., Jimmy John's and other properties to the next level... down.

As a mostly devoted non-purchaser of all of those brands - I concur completely.

Jimmy-Johns - CFO was sickened there during our inaugural, and probably final visit.

Dunkin' - HOW can you mess up a %$$@ DOUGHNUT?!?!
    EASY!
Dunkin' is a doughnut STORE (like WalMart.)
Do not make the mistake of confusing them with a doughnut BAKERY.

Arby's - WE HAVE THE MEATS.
Another astonishingly simple plan ruined. More meats. More expensive. More complicated. LESS quality, freshness, value.

Carl Jr - Sort of like Hardy's would be if they increased their price, decreased their quality, and forgot how to make biscuits.

Carl's and Hardee's were the same company long before they were acquired by Roark.

But now that they're all off in that private equity sphere, it's all about floating the bond. They're not really going to care about product quality beyond not getting sued.

I think I'll stick with my homemade sandwiches using Costco's organic peanut butter and organic strawberry jam.

I really love cooking for myself when I'm home. My traveling business, frequently working in unfamiliar cities presents some challenges in the nutrition department. Breakfast this morning was a banana from a gas station.

I have been keeping a map/log of all the good places I find though...

Back in my travelling days I always asked the folks I was working for where the best local/locally-owned spots were. Never went to a chain restaurant...

Yep, that's the kind of place I keep in my log. The chains are for when we are on stupid schedules and all the good places are (sensibly) closed for the night or holiday or whatever.

A member of the Krispy Kreme Club, I get emailed offers like:
    upload_2023-9-1_11-38-53.png

For medical reasons, I am not allowed to eat them but yesterday, I bought a 12-box and a pair of 6-boxes. I take them to my favorite pharmacy and neighborhood grocery store that also has a pharmacy extension of the first. Each pharmacy gets a 6-box and the grocery store manager gets the 12-box. Hot Krispy Kreme donuts on the first cool weather day ... everyone knows my name. <GRINS>

Propsts Drugs and Star Market have given me and my late wife excellent service since 1985. But you can't really tip them with money ... so hot donuts work.

we first went to subway in 2004, our first winter in florida. there is always one near the hotels on the road.
but a few years before covid, the quality seemed to be going downhill, so we found panera's instead.
their sandwiches, soups and salads are still pretty good.

I frequented Subway in the ‘70’s, but not since. They were ok then.
