Hi everyone, I'm freshly registered to the forums although I have been lurking for quite awhile. I have a 2010 Prius with 182,089 miles that up until now hasn't given me any major trouble. I love the vehicle and want to keep driving it but am starting to realize I'm going to have to embark on a lot of self-maintenance. Been reading a lot of guides about EGR cooler/valve cleaning.. intake manifold cleaning.. hybrid battery fan cleaning.. etc..

Well anyway... I was just driving to the store and on the ride back I started to smell coolant from the A/C vent. I popped the hood and lo-and-behold found a soft and wet hose. It's the first hose coming out of the leftmost coolant reservoir (picture 1). It's just a small drip/leak at the moment. I traced where those hoses go and connect to the engine.. and the next hose over seemed to be kinda soft as well (picture 2), although not quite leaking yet.

So my first question is, should I go ahead and replace all the hoses in that line as they are reaching end of life?

Second question, since it seems to be running on the upper side, will I need to drain the coolant reservoir and/or radiator or can I get away with just replacing the hoses without a major leak happening in the process?

Third question... what are the hoses in that line called and how do I find the part? Reservoir bypass line? Do I buy a generic hose and cut to fit, or can I buy all the hoses molded and cut to size? Autozone? Dealer?

Anything extra I should take into consideration otherwise straight forward hose swap? Such as burping air from the system afterwards, etc.?

Sorry for all the newbie questions. It's been awhile since I've embarked on auto repairs and I haven't worked on a Prius before but I'm eager to learn!

Thank you all for the wonderful guides and bastion of information that's available on these forums thanks to your contributions.

    What color is your coolant?

Those hoses normally won't ever get loose if there is a hose clamp on there. The condition of the hoses look pretty good still, not sure how they could have slipped out. Did someone service your car recently and needed to remove the hose?

I would buy a dealer hose. Just take the picture with you. Get the clamps as well.

Maybe it’s the pic but it looks like there is a tear in the hose.

Thought those were just the sides of the constant tension hose clamp

The EGR cleaning is best done by 100k miles at the latest. Any roughness/rattle during cold starts?

I apologize, I wrote the post in haste and should have explained myself a little better. The hose is pretty much rotted out where it connects to the reservoir. It's completely soft and gooey. While there isn't any visual cracks or tears, I have a feeling that it's swelling up from pressure and leaking as it's extremely malleable. The coolant color is the traditional Toyota pink.

Thank you for the reply. No visual tear, but the hose is extremely soft, gooey, and malleable. My guess is that it swells up and leaks. Likely to burst at some point. Luckily the dealership is 1 mile away so I'm going to risk a drive and see how much they are charging for a replacement hose. Is there a reason why only 1 end of the hose has a clamp on it? There's no clamp on the 'T' it connects to (see picture). The 'T' feels pretty flimsy.. like cheap plastic. I'm a little bit concerned when I try to squeeze the new hose on there I'm going to end up breaking something.

Yes I've had 2 episodes of "death rattle", usually doing a bad cold spell. Reading the Nutzandbolts guides and your personal experience in cleaning your EGR, I decided the smartest thing to do was to just buy an extra cooler and valve and preclean them and do a swap. I found a wrecked 2011 Prius on FB, pulled the valve and cooler which actually look moderately clean. I don't know the mileage of the donor Prius, but I'm sure mine are going to look way worse. It was only $100 and I got both the cooler, the valve, and the gaskets, bolts, etc. I figure when I swap them out, I can clean mine out properly and resell them at around the same price. I have a fear of 4 hour car projects spilling into 3 day ordeals especially since I don't have a covered carport or garage and I'll be working outside entirely.

It should have a clamp on both ends.

You need some special sockets for the egr access. It is a b…

Late in the day EGR cleaning won’t reverse a failing head gasket. It is good to do, but I’d check head gasket condition too. Boroscope inspection of the cylinders with the cooling system pressurized, and/or leak-down test, are the usual methods. The failure tends to be at the wall between cylinders one and two. From what you describe, and the miles, sounds like early stage of failure. But tests would be good.
