My 2007 Toyota Prius is in need of a new brake actuator, as well as 12V battery, water pump, and trunk lift gate. The combination meter also does not always come on in the cold weather and I live in Maine, so all in all with this most recent brake actuator issue feels like the final straw where I just need to sell/donate the car.

The car broke down in western Massachusetts last week and the dealership there quoted me about 4k for the actuator, battery, and water pump replacements. Basically the car can't drive more than a block without the ABS, VSC, (!), and e Brake lights all coming on and the car suddenly makes a loud noise. It had trouble braking when this happened which was unsettling.

My HV battery was replaced in 2019, I also just replaced the tires, and my cat converter is in tact :) All valuable parts of the car! I am on a tight budget and it doesn't make sense for me to keep pouring money into this car as much as I love it.

My question is: Any advice for how to sell the car or its parts? Are there Prius mechanic buyer types in MA on here who would want to take the car? This car has a significant dent in the front right corner. How much can one ask for the car when its in this state? Are you reading this thinking these repairs are actually minor and the dealership is overcharging you by 3k? If so, also please let me know that :)

    Thank you, all!

I think the dealership quote is actually reasonable.
The battery and cat should be worth a couple grand.
Selling in western Massachusetts from Maine might be problematic though.
    How many miles on her?

Thanks for this feedback! It was actually the only dealership I've ever worked with that I actually liked and seemed ethical. Lia Toyota in Northampton.
188k miles. I will have to go back to Mass to actually deal with the sale. I also have AAA and could have it towed within 100 miles, so if there's a place near Boston for instance that buys repair-needing Priuses that'd be great, but haven't found any online as of yet.

you can try selling on craigs list, or facebook marketplace, but the question is where to put the car so it can be seen.
this training center has a hybrid repair shop map, and there ate a couple out that way:

    'fixhybrid.com' i couldn't get a link to post.

Been thinking about this. With new vehicles in such short supply, used (in good repair) selling at a premium, and the lowish miles on yours, I’d be inclined to repair. How’s the body and suspension? If not bad, that’s a plus.

Seems like I don't agree with your definition of "lowish mileage" nor "tight budget" either.
I would NOT consider for a second putting 4K into a car like that.

No you could come down south and two or three days have your car ready to go back spend that or a little less the 4K and probably do something for around 2:00 Western Mass cars No you don't want to deal with those they they tend to get corroded and rusty really fast I lived there for a few years it was absolutely horrid on the vehicles

You clearly have a couple of decisions to make. Whatever you choose is going to present some big challenges, but can be done.

If you decide to fix and keep the car you need to locate an independent, highly experienced, capable, trustworthy, expert Prius mechanic. You need to do this through trusted family and friends, NOT by looking at ads. This will be hard.

If you decide to sell the car, you could advertise it here on PriusChat, on Craigslist, on FaceBook Marketplace, and anywhere which works locally for where you and/or the car is located. Your car is possibly quite a good buy for someone with DIY skills, and/or someone with these skills and who already has a similar car but wants to make "one good one" out of two not so good ones. This will present the challenge of dealing with all the people who respond, some of whom will be less than upstanding citizens. Be very careful, trust no-one, and have someone (ideally an off duty policeman male friend) with you any time you meet anyone. Any "place" that buys salvage Priuses is going to give you a fraction of what you should be able to get with significant effort. When you sell the car ensure that the buyer does whatever is required in your state to register it in their name, or at least get it out of your name, simultaneous with giving them the keys and title. Do NOT trust that they will "do this later".

For sure its a challenging situation, but in ironic ways the crazily inflated current car market works in your favor - your car is worth a lot more than it would be otherwise and many people are looking for cars they can fix and yours sounds quite fixable.

    Good luck.

The crazy car market is settling down quite a bit daily so there's always that to consider. A car from Western Massachusetts with dents in it and like is on borrowed time at best but be that as it may hustle what you can out of it I guess That's the name of the game now

If you paid for the diagnostics, they should've supplied you with a piece of paper that includes the scanned obd2 codes. Please post them here for additional guidance.

You don't have any friends in the southeast United States old friends that moved down years ago so on and so forth Florida retirees family friends .???? Maybe go for a visit while you're down there in the southeast there are plenty of generation twos to buy in all kinds of conditions whether you're looking for a cream puff for $8,000 to keep for a long time which wouldn't be smart and Western Mass or a 2000 2,500 beater. 4 Western Mass roads really easy unfortunately you might need to take a a few days to a week off to sort it out then drive home when I lived in Western Massachusetts I had family in North and South Carolina and rather than buy cars from other people in Western Massachusetts when I needed to buy another car I would leave Western Massachusetts and I would drive my worst vehicle that I owned down to North or South Carolina and I would find me a vehicle that I wanted another Toyota usually a Corolla and then I would leave the crappy Flintstones vehicle that I drove down to North or South Carolina and drive back with the southern car every 3 years about I would do this I spent a lot less money for the cars I got Southern cars to take back up north then when they Flinn stoned out I just do the thing over again I get to go down to the beach find the car hang out a little bit drive home leave the old car at the junkyard or wherever and wash or rinse and repeat in 3 years.
