prius 2015 @ 150k miles

    I just traveled to San Tan Valley Arizona from Connecticut with a 2015 prius and 150K miles. It took me 6 days to travel the 2500+ miles and I soon realized with the distance between exits and some of the mountainous landscape, I should have done a more thorough prep. I just had my brakes serviced, new tires and all my fluids are topped off.

    Is there a list of things (belts etc.) that I should have also checked? I'll be in Arizona for 6 weeks so I have time to prepare for the trip back. Also, if anyone knows of a reputable shop in my area, I'd like to have an inspection done before my return trip.

    At this point, you should just complete your travel as is. There are no belts on the car to change. You don't want to do any maintenance on a car without problems, you can potentially create a problem by changing things you don't really need. Especially with unknown shops and mechanics that may or may not be competent in servicing a Prius.

    I think you have all the basics covered, maybe recheck your oil and coolant levels. But other than that, you should leave everything as is.

    have you owned it since new? do you know the service history?

    what did the brake service consist of?

    I bought the car used with about 50K on it.

    The break service was a complete overhaul. New rotors and pads.

    if you've done all the regular service since 50k, just keep doing what you're doing.

    when you get home, look into cleaning the egr circuit, and a few other things not contained in the maintenance schedule.

    Thanks for that. I was hoping I wasn't going to find myself on the side of RT66.
    When I bought the car, it already had 50K on it. It was a Toyota "certified used car", whatever that means. I assume, they had done all the regular maintenance for it.

    yes, as you know, there's not a lot to do until 100 or 120k

    With 150k you definitely want to look into EGR cleaning, ASAP. At least 50k earlier would be better. 150k is when the head gaskets start letting go, quite regularly. It’s a third gen “feature”.

    there’s precious few professional shops* doing EGR cleaning BTW; don’t even entertain asking a Toyota dealership to do it; they’re a cruel joke. DIY if at all possible is the way to go.

    Have a look at my signature for more info on EGR cleaning. Transaxle fluid change, various other are of interest too. If on a phone turn it landscape to see signature.

    * Tampa Hybrids and Hybrid Pit Stop (LA) are worthwhile

    South Main Auto guy (in upstate New York) was dealing with a rusted out solid rear axle suspension. The fix was simple: got a salvage replacement shipped from a Florida wrecking yard.

    Before 2500miles trip i would check that cruise control works:)

    Before taking trip that long i would also pay special attention to tires, be it old or new tires. I had tiny leak in my other car and eventually the reason turned out to be screw in the tire.

    Tires are new and no leaks.

    I'm currently in San Tan Vally, AZ with no tools to speak of. Is there anyone out here that can properly perform the EGR cleaning? And if so, what should I expect to pay for this service? I did see youtube for NutzAboutBolts cleaning of EGR and it's beyond my ability especially in my present location.
