Third day with new car, dead 12V battery, second day in a row :(

I will take the plug-in functionality over a lower trunk deck any day. It also makes it easier to load and unload objects.

I still have my 2012 Prius Plug-In and never had any issues with my 12V battery.

Just replaced the original 12v battery recently after 11 years! It wasn't a coincidence that the battery finally died after I stopped driving the PIP when I got my Gen 5 Prius Prime last May.

 

What brand was the OEM battery?

 

I can’t believe you’ve been a member since 2008, there are are lots of pips, and were a lot more back in the day.
But like any older car, they are being replaced by newer vehicles, especially ev’s, as I hope to be doing soon

 

There have been other reports of the 12V in some Toyota hybrids dying for 'no reason'. Someone was once looking for help with an Auris hybrid. As stated, hybrid batteries are lower capacity. Maybe Toyota cut it too close with the battery size vs the vampire drain. One of those systems causing the drain could be out of spec, like something not going to sleep when the car powers down. A key fob stored nearby might be enough to keep the SKS awake. Really hard to pin such causes down.

Bad 12V batteries also happen. Though, I think those are easy to rule out.

The reddit poster should have gotten a new 12V. Repeated drainings to 'dead' shorten the battery's life, and that could be the cause of future incidences.

Not when it's a heavy or large object on a flatbed cart.

The gen4 Prime loses over 6 cubic feet of cargo space to the battery. It lost more space than in the C-max Energi did. A PHEV made from a model that wasn't even designed to be a hybrid, and came out 6 years earlier. The best that can said about the Prime battery mounting is that it is a cleanly done after market conversion.

 

Indeed , in an other matter ,they redesigned the hatch using carbon fiber and the looks front an back to mark a difference between the hybrid model.

 

Yeah, but I've seen very few on the roads. I recognize one when I see the silver bumper cover.

My rich ex-landlord used to have one, and he later traded it in for a Tesla Model S when that came.

On the other hand, there are many Gen 4 Prius Prime PHEVs on the road. So, statistically, you will have more people complaining about Gen 4 PHEV 12-V battery problems.

Moreover, as I said, I left my Gen 4 Prius Prime PHEV 12-V battery uncharged for six weeks this summer and had no issues. I am convinced that the problem is with the owners not using their cars properly.

Gen 4 Prius Prime actually has a lot of 12-V battery protection measures. It monitors the temperature, voltage, current, and SOC of the 12-V battery using a dedicated battery sensor to prolong its life. It is the owners who are the problem.

Yes, I've seen all those threads. I am an owner, too. There are no such issues if you know how to use your car, and contrarily, if you don't know how to use your car, you will drain the 12-V battery in a blink of an eye in any modern PHEV or BEV.

 

Isn’t it odd that pip owners knew how to operate their cars and prime owners didn’t

 

The name changed everything. Plug-In Prius was sensible/succinct; Prius Prime, just saying that, you feel like you're buying into the Toyota PR machine.

 

Does that mean people buying the Prius PHV overseas better knew how to operate their car than those buying the Prime?

It is simple physics. 12-V batteries don't go bad if they are properly recharged. Gen 3 Prius Prime is well-equipped to do that.

However, Gen 3 Prius Prime is a much more sophisticated car than the Gen 2 Prius PHEV, which means a much higher drain for the 12-V battery. That in turn means that it tolerates abuse by the owner (sitting in the car with the car not in the ready mode, only doing short trips, etc.) much less.

 

Interresting remarks , i am lost as to Prius prime ...what is a gen 3 Prius prime

 

I refer to the 2017–2022 Prius Prime PHEV as Gen 3, despite it being the second PHEV generation.
