Ford & GM adopt the Tesla Supercharger network standard (NACS).

    And now Kia and Hyundai. I do have a few questions related to the non-Tesla cars though.

    Will the cost of charging a non-Tesla at a supercharger owned by Tesla be the same as for a Tesla?

    Will the software integration of the car and smartphone app with the session initiation and payment system be as easy as with a Tesla?

    Are those known or to be demonstrated?

    Right now, Tesla has some Superchargers that have CCS adapters that they call Magic Docks. From what I've heard, they charge more for non-Tesla cars. That's ok, any port in a storm.

    Tesla already changes SuperCharger billing to existing Tesla owners. I'm going to emphatically vote "I don't know."

    As for "do I care," I have ordered a CCS-1 adapter kit for my Tesla. This gives me options to 'bridge the gap.' But my 2017 BMW i3-REx, it is already a 'dead' product no longer being sold by BMW.

    I do not expect BMW to make a NACS retro-kit for my BMW i3-REx. Given it has an onboard, 25 kW, motorcycle engine-generator that runs while rolling down the road, it is not likely to spend much time at any fast DC, CCS-1 charging station. L2 over night, yes. But the unreliability of Electrify America CCS-1 stations along with a lethargic 48 kW charge rate ... no.

    1) Unknown, I’ve heard reports of both.

    2) Unlikely. With a Tesla you simply plug in and the car starts charging. With a different car you will likely need to open the Tesla app first. Unsure though, perhaps it will be as simple.

    3) Tesla does have some ‘Magic Dock’ stations that allow any CCS vehicle to charge at them. I would expect the charging experience to be somewhere between the Magic Dock and native Tesla experience. No non-Tesla vehicles have been built with the NACS port yet.

    Tesla may eventually have a lower price scheme for their own cars which would motivate alternate car buyers to rethink the car they buy.

    Tesla seems like the only car company with prices that keep going down. Everyone else, prices keep going up.

    If the trend continues, eventually there will be affordable Teslas.

    The goal is getting easier to reach too. By 2025 there will be no more sub $20k cars in the USA. I can see spending more on an EV since there's less maintenance to do, especially if the EV's from said manufacturer prove to have good longevity.

    Eric Way, of News Columb YouTube video fame, held up his phone after charging at a Magic Dock in Kalifornia. and it looks like he paid $14.56 for 28 kWh. .52/kWh isn't bad at all compared to what I've seen here. At the local EVGo, unless you have a subscription plan, charging can be as high as .69/kWh with a .99 session fee, depending on the time of day. I got a $500 credit for buying the Bolt EUV, so I have a way to go. :D

    Just got a statement from my electricity supplier that charging during the week will be cheapest between 1 and 3 in the morning. You can still get a sub $20k car from IIRC 2 manufacturers. Small and spartan. But I also read many ICE makers are selling at under cost to manufacture due to low demand. Just like most EV makers.

    Works fine for Teslas after 2021 wanting to charge at a CCS-1 station. Mine is a 2019 so I've ordered the controller and wire harness kit that should be here Monday.

    But there is nothing for my 2017 BMW i3-REx to charge at a SuperCharger ... not that I want to. The slow, 50 kW, vehicle limited rate really puts it into 'hog mode' at SuperChargers that range from 150-250 kW.

    Not very generous - are they. Sheesh, with most slowpoke chargers that's a measly 7 kWh per evening. Guess that's okay if you only drive 20-25 miles or so per day

    The only cars I know of with a 3-5kW onboard charger are PHEVs. It is a rather short window, but not many cars use those super slow chargers.
