I purchased a hybrid from a different manufacturer in May of this year and it lasted all of two weeks before the battery went out. I am finally wrapping up the buy back and searching for a replacement hybrid vehicle (can't divulge the brand). The 2024 models are slowly coming into my area of Southern California and noticed most of the mark ups have been discontinued though unwanted accessories are still listed. I have the opportunity to buy another hybrid from the same manufacturer with more bells/whistles than the Prius Limited and it is more to my liking BUT I am gun shy after the bad experience with my car and lack of support. Reliability and great mpg is what I'm after and having had a Camry and Solara Vert that were dependable in the past I'm leaning towards the Prius.

I'd appreciate your takes on the car (pros/cons), reliability and support from Toyota if necessary.

Thanks much in advance for any replies !

Yup. We’ve owned 4 - 2005, 2010, 2016 and 2018 Prime and I’m sure members here also have had multiple Prii. Our 2005 ran 150,000 miles before the Hv battery died (11.5 years old), the 2010 was traded in at 100,000 miles, the 2016 is still going at 60,000 miles and the Prime was traded in at 30,000 miles for an EV.

Also, the number of Gen 2 owners here speak to the reliability of the cars as they’re still around and there are still owners asking for help with repairs or maintenance. Heck, I just saw a 2012-2014 Prius v taxi the other day (there’s a number of those still around). Haven’t seen a Gen 2 in a while but some of the newest Gen 3s are still running. And of course Gen 4 taxis. Haven’t seen any Gen 5s yet but a local car share operator has a fleet of Gen 5s.

Aside from the 2010 model year with the head gasket issue, it’s mostly good. The Gen 2s are the most reliable but they are getting up there in age.

if you want reliability, and i'm not talking about goofy stuff people have trouble with like infotainment, but gets me from a to b without a breakdown, you won't do better than toyota.no one can touch them for that.
i just purchased a chevy bolt, and the problems over in the bolt forums are scary. after twenty five years with toyota, i'd forgotten how bad other manufacturers are.
most people have good luck, but the number with major problems with new cars far exceeds anything you see here.

Thanks both for your replies. My past experiences with Toyota have been good and it sounds like that remains. I hope those with the 23/24 model years can respond with their opinions not only on reliability factors but some of the quirks detailed in reviews/YouTube videos revolving around lack of vision with the speedometer, poor storage/livability, interior quality and poor stereo in the Limited/optional XLE 12.3 version. Lastly, I enjoy a functional moonroof and it appears this fixed version is only for observation and wouldn't be used often enough to justify the added price. Hope others chime in.

This 2023 Prime is the first Prius I have owned, since July and I would definitely buy it again. Awesome car, I love it. I never owned a Prius before, would not even have looked at it. Have forever driven VWs, like the feel of a European car, but this Prius makes me move on. No issues with visibility on the speedometer, no issues with stereo (it is fine, this is a small car), and yes, this is a fairly small car so if you need to haul a lot in this car, get something else. I have the glass roof, would not have paid for it except it was on the car I found. Now that I have it, I like it a lot - no leak issues, nice light, makes the car feel more spacious. There are probably only about a handful of days anywhere you live these days where you'd want to open it :) I don't have backseat passengers, if you do and they are larger people, that could be a concern. This car drives GREAT, is fun to drive, and if you are interested and can do a plug-in it is basically a full electric car for local driving. I am not a "car person" but love this car. Interior is fine, does not feel cheap. Maybe not like a high end European car, but I like it, and it is very functional. I could probably do without the red thin light across the bottom of the controls but not really an issue (figured I better say something negative so you don't think this is a paid Toyota post;). Good luck

I ended up with the XSE Premium (I wanted the XSE) and in hind sight the extra stuff was worth it. Just for clarity in Canada you don't get to pick and choose options as much, it's just trim levels, the base SE, the XSE and XSE premium. I wasn't expecting to use the heated steering wheel and vented seats but the level of comfort they add is amazing. Due to the lack of visibility through the back window I have the rear camera showing on the rear view mirror all the time. The one feature I don't use is the auto park. I'd buy the vehicle again.

Limited AWD owner here with the 360 camera option. Absolutely would buy again. Only other version I would consider is the Prime XSE Premium. For me in my region and driving patterns, the HEV AWD is probably just a tiny bit better than the PHEV FWD. My temps get low enough for 4-5 months of the year that the ICE will kick on for heat regardless of the battery charge. Plus most of my trips are short enough that the ICE will barely heat up and shut off before I get to my destination. At that point, it's actually less efficient to drive the PHEV vs the HEV. Plus I get the AWD for the snow/ice. But my situation is absolutely not the norm. In any other climate, I'd go with the Prime.

edit: I've put on a little over 3000 miles in four months.

That has always been the case. My 2021 Prius Prime Limited came with both a carpet-mat package and an all-weather-mat package.

A big upgrade from my previous car 2004 Mazda 3. Purchased in large part due to California Clean Air incentives. I love driving it. Wish it had the 360 panoramic monitor but the park assist has worked well with the ultrasonic sensors when it comes to maneuvering in tight places. It is a car I will have and enjoy for a long time. Driven about 800 miles so far and about half have been electric and half from gas engine. Nice to have the 500 miles of range. Hard to beat the combination of comfort, utility, efficiency, range, reliability, cost of ownership and visual appearance at the Prius price point in my eyes.
