What are the exact replacement windshield Wiper inserts?

There is really no reliable option for aftermarket wiper inserts. Even if there were, they wouldn't perform as well as the excellent Toyota OEM made-in-Japan rubber inserts that are sold dirt cheap.

For my old Toyota, I bought the OEM wiper rubber insert in bulk and cut it to appropriate lengths for my driver and passenger sides. They are somewhere in the garage. I don't have the part number at hand.

 

Just did mine this weekend for the first time (still rainy up here) - purchased the refills at Toyota, $22 out the door for both - once I looked up how to pull the old out of the fixtures whole process took about 10 minutes - thank you Toyota for making this cheep and easy

 

I just purchased OEM replacement windshield wiper rubber inserts for both my Priuses, a 2018 Prius Three and a 2019 Prius Prime. I just checked and the 2020 Prius Prime uses the same parts as well for the windshield wiper rubber inserts.

Here are the part numbers for the wiper rubber inserts:

That's the website I used to look up the part numbers. The MSRP is $10.99, and some dealerships will list their prices on that website as well.

In my case, I called around several dealerships in my area to shop around and check that they had them in stock.

Caution:
The wiper rubber inserts only fit the original wiper blades that came with the car from the factory. For some reason, there is another line of wiper blades that are also sold at Toyota dealerships branded "Toyota SightLine" wiper blades. They come in a nice package/box and although they have the Toyota name on them and the dealerships will market them as "Genuine Toyota," they are not actually the ones that are installed at the factory. The SightLine wiper blades are only sold as a whole wiper blade. So, when the SightLine wipers wear out, you can't just replace the rubber inserts on those. And I learned, to my surprise, that some of the Toyota dealerships in my area only stock the SightLine wiper blades. So, you might want to check first that they have the parts you're looking for before you head out there.

Side note: I've heard from an independent Toyota mechanic that the OEM wipers installed from the factory (with the replaceable rubber inserts) are superior in quality to the SightLine wipers, but I'm sure you'll find different opinions out there. Personally, I decided to stick with the wiper blades that came with my car, so I went with the inserts. Additionally, at $10.99, the replacement inserts are cheaper in cost than buying a whole SightLine blade.

The dealership might warn you that the inserts are a bit fussy to install. Today was my first time changing them, and I didn't think it was too bad. I followed the instructions in the owner's manual. The inserts on the front windshield wipers turned out to be very easy actually. However, the rear wiper (on my 2018 Prius Three) was a bit tricky. But since the Prius Prime doesn't have a rear wiper, you won't have to worry about that.

Just wanted to share my experience if it might help you and others in this forum.

P.S. -- Oh, I forgot to mention. The length of the right (passenger side) front wiper rubber insert is almost exactly same length (if not exactly the same length) as the rear window wiper rubber insert (for my 2018 Prius Three), so they are potentially easy to mix up. However, they are not interchangeable. The guy at the dealership actually gave me the wrong one and I didn't notice until I got home and was checking the part numbers. I had to drive back to the dealership to swap it out for the correct one. If you're curious, because I have two cars -- one 2018 Prius Three and one 2019 Prius Prime -- and I wanted to change the wiper inserts on both cars, I needed 2 Left Wiper Inserts, 2 Right Wiper Inserts, and 1 Rear Wiper insert. But the guy at the dealership handed me 2 Left Wiper Inserts, 1 Right Wiper Insert, and 2 Rear Wiper inserts. It looked correct when he handed it to me since the Right and Rear ones look almost exactly the same. It wasn't until I got home when I took a very close look at it when I realized the mistake and had to go back to fix it.

 

My oem blades on my 2017 chatter, make noise across the windshield. They are only a year old. I cleaned them with a wet paper towel but same thing happens. I doubt they're worn out so is there something I can put on them to stop the noise and chattering?

 

Clean your windscreen with Rainx or equivalent. That'll stop the chattering for a bit.

 

Just clicked the link for Toyota Parts Deal. Yes, about $8 each, not bad....however, they want $10 shipping, so with everything, about $30.
The stealership I go to wanted I believe $26...and they'd put them on. (last I tried to put them on my Prius V, I didn't do so well)

You guys keep referring to the wiper blades as rubber. You sure they're not silicone?

 

I was wondering this too. My original on my 2017 are starting to squeak and chatter.

 

Clean the windshield with an auto glass stripper. It removes film on the glass that you can't see but makes the blades chatter.

 

Just a PSA: if you're doing wiper replacement, any time you've got the wiper off the arm, lay some sort of heavy blanket along the base of the windshield, wher the arm would thwak down if you let go of it the wrong way...

Attachment is from the Repair Manual. Why it isn't in the Owner's Manual, is a very good question.

 

LoL; now it's too clean. LoL Use Rainx or some sort of glass wax product on it. That'll stop the chattering.
I believe these blades are rubber. Mine has fallen apart, as rubber blades do in very hot conditions. They separated at the pivot point. Got a 28 inch silicone, Toyota equivalent from China, on order. Will report back when installed and tested.

@Mendel - Thanks for the PDF. So the front wipers doesn't have the metal reinforcement backbone strips. My SOP is gently laying the bare wiper rod on a thick folded rag - between the glass & rod. I don't let go of the rod, until it's down on the rag. That prevents any accidental glass chips & divots. If you don't have a rag handy; a small 2x4 or 4x4 piece of lumber will work - you just want to prevent the wiper arm from whacking the glass.

 

They do. You transfer over the metal strips from the old ones.

 

Ok, thanks. The instructions doesn't mention the metal strips on the front blades, just on the rear.

I'll find out when I replace them, just haven't done it on the Prime yet.

 

Got a 28" silicone blade from China. Took almost a month to arrive and not as flimsy as the OEM. Cut both ends off, left picture. I got antsy and ordered a pair of blades from Walnut, Ca.; right item; because it's scheduled to rain this coming Monday.
Well the 2021 blades doesn't have the metal spline, and the end caps are NOT removable. I had to actually read the manual, no help there on how to get the OEM blades out. I finally figured it out, after a beer. Yay beer!!!! There's a 1/4 inch channel gap, where the blade meets the end-cap. Your suppose to compress/shimmy the old rubber down - once the old rubber is at the channel gap - you pull it towards you to slip it out of the channel. Work the rest of the old blade out that end. Reverse the process with the new blade.
I had to nip the ends of my new blade, because they are closed ended (see left blade picture). I took off about a half an inch total length. that actually helped with the install, since the replacement is stiffer than the thin OEM. It tested and wiped great.
The right picture was what I received from Walnut, Ca.. It should work, but you have to cut it down the center. Not recommended, if you don't make a straight cut - it isn't going to wipe evenly. I'm going to use it for my shorter wiper blades.

Hope this helps someone replacing their OEM blades.

Yeah no mention of steel ribs in the front blades, but they mention "backer plates" with the rear wiper.

 

Yep, my Gen 4's don't have metal backs on them. I got these from my dealer and fit both 2017 and 2021 (I haven't needed to replace the rear blade, yet.)
