I'm about ready to put the head back on and have ran into a question I can't answer. I am very thankful for the folks with helpful answer so far.

There are notes in this thread (2011 Prius Head Gasket Failure | Page 2 | PriusChat) about needing to apply RTV to the cylinder block in two places before reassembly. But the Toyota reassembly instructions don't seem to mention this (page 35 of https://attachments.priuschat.com/attachment-files/2021/03/203171_2010_Toyota_Prius_Repair_Manual_-_Cylinder_Head.pdf). Any help where I am supposed to put the RTV?

I'm sure I'll have more questions so I'll post them as I get further into the reassembly process. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to driving this thing

I friended you on Fuelly by the way. I don't have any fillups for my Prius yet but I have logged all my cars on Fuelly back to 2008/2009 when they first started. I think I have a couple thousand fillups logged there.

    Alright, here's another one.

I bought a "triple-square" bit in error based on one of the youtube head gasket videos' recommendations. I learned later it is a bi-hexagon, which is not the same thing. The triple-square removed the old head bolts easily, but I knew I was throwing those away. I have new ones now. Is there any chance a triple-square bit will strip out the new bolts? Somebody must have done this before.

It seems to be working for Gasket Masters. Still, how much are you looking for the correct bit, around $20 USD?

Good to hear. Thanks for the reply!

When I have the choice, I always choose not to fund the CCP by buying cheap chinese crap, which is all the auto parts stores keep in stock around here.

Alright, I got the head back on as well as the cams. The triple-square didn't seem to have any issues when torquing down the head bolts. (I bought new ones for the reinstall.) Happy to make some progress as my home schedule has kept me from doing anything except a bit of cleaning/cleanup the past week. Next up is putting the timing chain on and timing the engine.

The triple square has “sharper” corners (90 degrees vs 60), and the points are very slightly more protuberant. So it has uneven contact in the head bolt sockets, just contacts in the corners. It “works” but not optimum. Gasket Masters don’t help the confusion, always reference it.

Double check my work on timing:

Single orange link: Exhaust cam, with the timing mark in the center of the link
Single yellow link: Crankshaft, with the timing mark in the center of the link
Double orange links: Intake came, with the timing mark in between the two links
(Lastly - there are two grooves in the intake cam actuator. The timing mark is the one that points directly at the center of a tooth. The other one is nothing)

The bold is the one I would be grateful if someone could double check for me.

I have that PDF too. But i'm not sure if I can actually tell from that picture. The resolution has been compressed a little too much.
