Worth getting a Prolong charger at 190k original battery?

    There is a local guy who has a prolong charger/discharger for sale for 3rd gen prius. My car, 2013 Prius V has 190k and still on the original battery. I purchased the dr prius app but have not done the battery test just yet. I have never had any kind of battery error and my two last tanks of gas averaged 49.9mpg and 48.0mpg so i feel like the battery must still be strong but wondering if I start using the prolong if it would be worth it. Hes asking $450 which is a fair amount off retail, or should I just wait and put the money towards a new battery when the time comes?

    If mine were already 10 years old I'd just start saving for a replacement battery.

    You cannot really recondition a 3rd gen battery (2010 to 2015) and expect a long service life. That generation is much harder on the battery than the previous generation (which you can successfully recondition). So my suggestion is not to waste your money and use that money towards a new battery when it fails.

    Yes I made the mistake of buying a pretty nice grid charger the Venice hybrid setup both pieces the discharger and the charger itself it has settings for Honda Toyota and so on and so forth batteries It's a nice setup and the guy who makes them can make them configured in certain ways I wanted mine with all the switches and buttons down one side and the display on top so it can stand up on its end without falling over that was an easier request in the guy was like no problem shipped to me in 6 days I've used the thing maybe one time because when your battery starts getting up in age 10 years around that It seems to me that there's usually other damages starting to happen in the battery case just because of age and or mileage and then I wind up doing lots more or changing the whole battery rack itself so my nice charger spends a lot of time sitting and I have five or six Prius vehicles all with the same battery style like yours with your car getting 49 and a half miles to the gallon and being a Gen 3 I would pray and be relatively quiet because that's not too bad aren't you at 13 years now or something so reality is you're falling in the range of when Toyota and battery people say that the battery should start heading south time wise. Because you're not at the mileage well that doesn't really have much to do with the battery that's just your use or not use of the car to make everything last maximum in a Prius as far as the battery and all that goes these cars need to be in the wind so people doing delivery work Uber eats stuff like that these cars seem to do real well I have a 2010 solar roof car with 365,000 mi on an original junkyard battery because the one that came with the car was corroded to death bus bars and nuts etc. So really it's a Toss up. If playing around with the batteries and that sort of thing interest you and you want to learn something about it then the 450 might be worthy of your time but generally a $500 tool should get some use. And if you're an HVAC school or studying to be an intangible assets guru or something like that this type of stuff may quickly not interest you.

    The system for the "V" (wagon) is different from the regular Gen 3 system.
    You need to go to the Prolong page and see which one fits your car.
    If it is the one that fits your car, it will be worth it. Make sure you get the harness that attaches
    to the hybrid battery or you'll be paying $150 for it. And if you have to do that, you might as
    well get a new one which comes with a warranty.

    You want to use it BEFORE you start having issues. Like you change your oil and filter BEFORE
    the oil wears out and and you burn up your engine.

    Can you please explain this to me in more detail. The battery modules are the same between Gen 2 & 3, so how is the Gen 3 harder on the battery than the Gen 2?

    The cooling is the main reason the 3rd gen battery is inferior. The 3rd gen battery runs much hotter and deteriorates to a point of no return when it does fail.

    It's BEST if you use this BEFORE your battery declines.
    I had noticed was staying at the 2nd bar a lot longer before going
    to the 3rd bar, then it went to the 4th bar a lot quicker.
    The engine would start after being at the 3rd bar for a short time and usually
    it would drop to the 2nd bar right after the engine started.
    After my first use of the Prolong system, everything went back to being smooth.
    For about 10 months. Then it slowly started doing what it had done.
    So I used it again. I've used it 3 or 4 times and it's been 8-10 months.
    Except for the last time. It was about 7 months and all was fine but I wasn't going anywhere
    for about 4 days so I decided to run it while I had the opening.
    7-9 August, 2021 is when I first used the Prolong system.

    Cleaned Hybrid Fan and housing, really wasn't dirtly.
    Cleaned Bus Bar and Nuts on the rear of the battery, the really weren't dirty either.
    Charged battery, Discharged battery, All 4/3 cycles
    I had 243850 miles on it, original hybrid battery.

    I now have 317,700 miles on my 2010 Prius.
    This system certainly has worked for me.

    Hey guys, I have a like new Prius hybrid battery, bought directly from a Toyota dealership in September of 2022. Installed and driven only 6,000 miles. Tested at over 96% original capacity. Ready to install and fully assembled, includes all battery casing, mounts, screws, wiring, and the battery computer control module (Toyota sells just the battery insides and requires assembly). Recently pulled out of a 2008 Prius that was in a drivers side side-swipe accident and still drove perfectly fine after the accident. Battery was $3,300 MSRP and didn’t include all of the above-mentioned items. Receipt available, asking $1,800. Located near Berea Ohio, local pickup only.     Gen3 and Gen2 Have identical batteries but Gen3 has a more powerful gas engine and more powerful motor-generator, thus Gen3 will be a lot harder on the battery pack than Gen2.
