This is all really helpful. Thank you. I'll push my dealer on the ERG thing.

If you were looking for a hatchback or even small suv that got good mileage, was reliable, and could handle country living, what would you be looking for? My prius is just right 90% of the time. I sorta wish it had a bit more leg room for the driver, a bit more clearance, and a roof rack. All could be added via mods, but it makes me wonder if I'm trying to make it something its not, and if I'm getting a different car, I'm torn about which direction to take it. (gen 5 and mod it, rav4, something entirely different?)

Considering the price of the new Prius and Rav4 Primes, a BEV won't stretch the budget much.

It’s EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). If at all possible I would DIY, or work with competent independent shop not averse to doing a little cleaning. The dealerships and Toyota have adopted a head-in-the-sand attitude on this.

If you really press them they will replace every blessed component the exhaust gas runs through; you’re looking at about a grand there, before they get around to labour.

see first couple of links in my signature for some idea of what’s involved. On a phone turn it landscape to see signature.
