    Christopher Thomas Knight:
    Burglar.

That's what the Googles said about him.
I'd probably label him as a former burglar.
He was caught, and paid for his crimes.
FORTUNATELY, the Maine game warden did the off-hand, shooting hand thing with a tacticool flashlight and his old-school .357 - a pretty good demonstration of modern police work.

Chris is obviously pretty smart, so it's easy to see how he managed to get away with thousands of nocturnal B&Es without getting shot for his efforts.
Michael Finkel left Chris' story hanging on the cliff, but a brief look into the Googles suggests that Chris stayed in jail for seven months, paid a fine and went back to his solitary life in the woods of Maine - enriched probably with a stipend from SSDI and a PO Box.

The latter two are a guess - otherwise Chris is a repeat offender but he's obviously a little too Asperbergery to be employable and I suppose his cooperation with MDOJ will pay dividends in not having to incarcerate him for repeat law enforcement encounters.

    Win win.

It mentions he’s going to live with his mom. Getting up in years, that’s good; sounds like he just about didn’t make it, some winters.

Could you imagine living for 20 some years in the Maine woods in nothing but a tent in the winter? The article is simply fascinating on how he was able to survive.
