Toyota Unveils the Powerful and Purely Hybrid Next Generation Camry

    But the current-gen Camry LE HEV gets the same mpg as the Gen 5 Prius XLE/Limited, despite being a lot bigger. Chances are that the next-gen Camry LE HEV will get a higher mpg than the Gen 5 Prius XLE/Limited.

    All I can say is that acronyms can be a pain in the rear part of the body. As an amateur radio operator this gets even more confusing. USB can mean either Universal Serial Bus or Upper Side Band. A lot of times I send data over USB to my transmitter to send it out over USB.

    The whole AWD vs 4WD is also confusing. I had an AWD Chevy Astro and my brother a 4WD GMC S10 and both had nearly the same transfer case that worked with the same type of viscous clutch mechanism, with the exception of the Astro not having the low-range option in the transfer case. In fact they were interchangeable with a couple of modifications.

    I'd prefer a Camry over a Prius (assuming it's not radically different than the current Prius). More room and better fuel mileage would be very welcoming as long as it still has a spare tire. A compartmentalized separate trunk is also a plus seeing how I knew a lady who got killed from a piece of ski equipment bouncing out of the rear luggage area and hitting her in the head in a 25mph single car accident. Just imagine what could happen with stuff in the luggage area of a hatchback, crossover or station wagon that's not secured if you're going 75mph! My dad would tell me not to put tools in the cabin of his truck because, according to him, in a rollover it would become a blender.

    the new camry blurb is all about power, speed and awd option, none of which interest me.
    probably has lower mpg's like prius, but i didn't see anything in the article

    The MT article did mention the LE getting 16in wheels. Maybe its mpg rating won't backslide.

    BEV doesn't really need a "B" ....
    because everybody knows what folks are talking about when someone says EV

    if we just say "plugin" instead of phev - it doesn't confuse anyone into thinking a PHEV is in anyway an ev. some may only go 10 measly miles or so in a plugin.

    Same with the word "hybrid" as most interpret that as multiple methods of propulsion

    but of course - folks are welcome to disagree

    BEV is the correct, accurate term accepted by the industry. Perhaps laymen don't need to, but on PriusChat, we should use it appropriately. EV is a generic term that can refer to any car with a traction battery, in fact, even to a fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV).

    A plug-in electric vehicle could either be a BEV or a PHEV.

    Nah, Gen 5 Prius has better fuel economy than Gen 4 Prius. Next-gen Camry LE HEV will most likely get significantly better fuel economy than the current gen.

    Moreover, you are missing TSS 3.0, improved multimedia, and all the other improvements. Next-gen Camry is a win–win over the current gen. If cars didn't improve with gens, Gen 2 Prius would be the king now.

    funnily, after 20 year of camry's, mrs b drove my bolt and said she'd like to look at the rav4 prime next time around.
    she liked the improved view and ease of ingress and egress.

    While there are moments I think I'd want an SUV or crossover SUV for a daily driver I then remember that in the past 15 years 10 of my neighbors have been ran over, and it's always an SUV, crossover or pickup that does it, and the driver always says "I couldn't see them!"

    People are running over their own kids in these tall nosed vehicles. This is the main reason a car like the Camry appeals to me.

    Mrs b feels that she can see better out of the bolt than the Camry.
    It seems like the Camry has gotten lower over time

    might the accidents be more SUV, crossover or pickup because that's what more & more we find out there now days?
    some of the smaller cars we've owned (volt, prius, civic) have hardly been a picnic to see out of ... anymore than our ownership of model X or minivan. Newer vehicle shapes cater to efficiency/drag before visibility unfortunately.
    BUT ... sensors & cameras have made a big improvement for both big & small rides.

    The new Camry is getting a power boost over the old. Not as big as what the Prius saw, but enough for me to not predict a substantial improvement in fuel economy in the LE. Maybe the decontented trim will see 55mpg.

    I wonder if seat position plays a part. Setting seat in the Camry like I had it in the Sonic, meant the roof line intruded more into view.

    The Camry is one of the most outstanding cars in the Auto Industry.

    55mpg - perfect sized sedan- great comfortable interior, all the features you could want and built right here in the USA.

    It is no wonder it is the undisputed heavyweight champion of sedans in the US for over 20 years.

    When you look at Toyota's core brands in the US - Corolla, Camry, Sienna and RAV4 you begin to realize what a powerhouse this manufacturer is.

    It's a percentage based on miles driven per segment, so no, it's not that there's more SUV's.

    In 1975 17% of all vehicle accident related deaths were due to pedestrians dying. By 2007 that had dropped to 11%. By 2018 it had risen back to 17% where it has stayed ever since. So if you could elimiate all pedestrian deaths due to vehicle accidents you could lower all vehicle accident related deaths by 17% today.

    Looking at pedestrian deaths per 100,000 people it dropped to an all time low of 1.3 pedestrians dying for every 100,000 people in 2009 and then rose to 2.2 by 2021. For refference, we're back up to the same rate as in 1992 and 1993. In other words, since 1992 we really haven't improved pedestrian safety. Well, it improved for 17 years then went back down so that now, nearly 32 years later your not any safer walking down the street than you were back then.

    Then looking at what vehicles are doing the killing and:
    Intrestingly there's no big difference between cars and utilitarian vehicles when turning right.
    However:
    Referrence: SUVs, other large vehicles often hit pedestrians while turning

    To sum it up, the pedestrian death rate per population has risen 69% since 2009 and the ones that are way more likely to cause those deaths are SUV's and pickups as those can be as much as 80% more likely to run over a pedestrain than a traditional car. If we traded all the SUV's and pickups for sedans and hatch backs and true station wagons, then the pedestrian death rate would drastically decrease.

    Not that I don't agree that visibility isn't a problem with many sedans and hatchbacks. It should be made better on all cars. What I don't agree with is that sensors are helping, yet. The death rate of pedestrians needs to drop below that of 2009 for it to show that they are actually helping.

    This is the first photo I've seen that really shows the size of the Camry. I figured it was the same length as the current gen but the press release photos made it look smaller.
