Car dealers are my buddies? Perhaps they could give me a $5,000 dealer discount from MSRP on a Gen 5 Prius Prime then. :)

If you think car dealerships are dishonest, then see how Wall Street and investment banks are. They are on a far different level of dishonesty. ;)

there's a lot more to bev's than batteries, although they play a crucial role. tesla is far advanced from everything i've read.
and if you don't believe the chinese steal critical technologies and ignore patents, you're living under a rock.

Tesla's unwillingness to accept razor-thin profit-margins is big problem. Toyota thrives on that and is capitalizing on the high-profit opportunity of the moment to financially compete in that arena again. The squeeze in China is nasty. It is only a matter PC time before we feel it here too.

toyota has had almost a hundred years to perfect their craft, and 150 of manufacturing.
    it's a ridiculous comparison

Since they are competing in the same market for the same customer, it is absurd for you to dismiss the comparison.

Now why should any company that wants to be successful "accept razor thin profit margins" when they can sell all the product they can build with higher margins and invest the profit into new technology for the next generation with a view to build a cheaper/better product with all the expense that requires and have a margin of safety? It takes money to build factories to produce more cars to displace ICE vehicles. And that investment in future products has to be done over years, something Toyota forgot to do. Their press release future cars aren't here today when we need to start displacing gas guzzlers.

Would Ford have been successful if they stopped at the Model T because they didn't have enough profit to develop the Model A?

Who forgot to do what? We're seeing other legacy automakers backpedal while Toyota continues to push forward. It's a tortoise & hare race.

As for when, that's key. Business is cyclical. At some point, they will have no choice.

Our moderator @Tideland Prius went with a Kia EV6. @bisco just bought a Chevy Bolt EUV LT. Competition is growing fast. Hyundai/Kia is probably leading the competition at the moment. Volkswagen is putting a lot of resources on BEVs, and there are many others.

I wonder how many dealers that were gouging customers on EV prices, signed the petition because they're now stuck with stock, since wizened customers went elsewhere.

Options are good, as is competition.
I have been hearing how the ‘competition’ is going to crush Tesla for a decade.

The options available have not impacted Tesla sales in any meaningful way yet. I don’t believe they will for at least 5-10 years.

Who exactly is backpedaling? Links please...

As for Toyota, as you stated they hope to make the bcx4 competitive with what's on the market today within a few years. Unfortunately, everyone else will keep moving forward. We already saw the id.4 get a range and power increase, putting it even further ahead of the system uncompetitive Toyota (per you) offering.
