Avalon NiMH cells the same?

This website is awesome! I just bought two 2nd gens and I plan on keeping them forever. I do engines and transmissions for a living so I'll be around here awhile I think

Both have bad HV batteries. I can get a good NiMH battery out of a 2016 Avalon. Everything I can see online says the cells are the same

1. Can anyone verify they are definitely the same and I can use the cells to rebuild my 2nd gen Prius pack

2. If the battery is charged should I still go through the whole cq3 reconditioning process or can I slap them together by voltages and pray it works?

My cq3 won't be here until probably at least the 15th

I can get the Avalon pack tomorrow. Both of my priuses have red triangles of death right now I haven't even heard either of them start yet (lol)

There's a lot of local junkyards in my area and when I was younger I worked for a couple of them

I managed to get a 2013 Prius battery with unknown miles and a 2016 Avalon with 110k today. 150$ for both lol

Both are NiMH

So I just bought these two priuses and haven't heard either of them start because they sat for some years and HV batteries are dead

Is it foolish to just slap together the 2016 Avalon cells in one of my packs just to see how the cars run? Or should I absolutely wait two weeks for the cq3 to get here?

After two weeks I'd pull the Avalon battery out and go through it. Just wondering if a basic multimeter setup might work for the meantime

 

I saw that thread about building my own. I'll probably end up doing that soon, but for now I'd rather do the cells individually with a cq3. I'm about to order that friday

I broke apart the avalon battery (34 cells inside) and all cells tested between 7.51-7.53v

The 2013 prius cells were all 7.3v except for 4 on one end which all read less than 1v

I assembled one battery with all avalon cells

The other battery got all the 24 7.3v cells out of the 2013 prius battery and 4 of the remaining 2016 avalon cells. I have this battery balancing now with welders wire

I'm fairly confident the battery with all avalon cells will work. But I'm wondering about the battery full of 7.3v cells. Will that be enough to start the engine?

 

Well I got the battery in and it didn't start

I have 209v on the input side of the SMRs

Pulled both battery modules with the plug that tends to burn up and both are corroded horribly

Ordered a 89890-47092

Anyone know if this module going bad can prevent the SMRs from closing and giving power?

 

There were 34 cells in the Avalon battery and 28 in my priuses. I used 28 of the Avalon cells to build one battery and combined the other 6 with the good cells out of a donor battery to make a 2nd

You were right about the harness. Waiting for two ecus and two harnesses to get here now. Expected delivery by the 16th so hopefully I'll have good news then

For clarification, the donor battery I mentioned was a 2012 Prius battery and it looked like the HV control module for that one exploded on the inside and all 4 of the first cells in the pack were drained to nothing

Otherwise I wouldn't have mixed and matched. But I did balance these cells and all tested good

Well with a new 12v, rebuild HV battery, and HV ecu and harness they both fire right up

Mission accomplished. I'll be sticking around I guess
