I'll have the service center do that on one door to identify how bad the situation is.

Yes, but no middle one on the G5's.

The factory is removing the rear plug on the back doors, and it is appearing like all the plugs might need to be removed.

I've read some more threads on folks dealing with mildew inside their doors. In some cases, water is pooling in between the weep holes. The G5 is a new design and they might not have quite got the door drain issue solved.

I will say that the plugs are quite tight and I'm not convinced the flaps are loose enough to let all the water pass.

If you leave your G5 outdoors exposed to the elements, I would definitely leave the plugs out. My car is in a garage, has been rained on a couple times, and snowed on once, and I'm dealing with this mildew issue.

I'm far from convinced that whatever your problem is - you don't even know it's mildew - it's going to be solved by pulling plugs out, given that there's absolutely no evidence of water collection in your case. Or that it's anything to do with your car being outdoors.

A "my door smells weird" problem with no other symptoms could be made worse, or cause real problems by increasing the number of entry points.

How many of the doors smell, by the way? I don't think you've actually said.

PS I'm impressed that you've managed to get the dealer to pay attention to a smell.

I tried to get mine to understand that the entire car vibrates when the radiator fan spins up - I think they thought I was being confused by the engine stopping and starting. My Finnish isn't really good enough for prolonged dealership debates...

Oh well, at least I tried, so if it disintegrates and takes out the radiator the warranty coverage can't complain that I didn't report the issue earlier...

Maybe I'll try giving them precise instructions in writing on how to use the Techstream to spin the fan up to reproduce it next time I'm in to pick up the second key.

When the plugs are removed run something like a zip tie up the drain holes, might break up a clot.

Well if it's mildew, which it appears to be looking (smelling) that way, increased drainage/ventilation of doors should be helpful. I see no possibility of it getting worse from increasing ventilation.

Four doors exhibit the same bad smell. One seems to be worse than the others.

I walked him over to my car and said, "smell this". I thought it was a sulfur/grease smell. He thought it smelled like old water. He shook my door to listen for water sloshing.

I agree, the service centers seems to be taught to deny everything and act as if the customer is a moron. I'm not a moron, or a number, so I push back hard. On a previous car I went all the way to the general manager and got an appointment with a field specialist. He wasn't able to solve the issue either. I solved it by trading the car in.

Being very precise and making it clear that you are not an uninformed, thoughtless customer, is a good first step. They are trained to throw up lots of resistance.

Yes, that technique was discussed. I have yet to do it because my car has so few miles on it. It seems insane to me that I would have plugged drains. Never know though...

Our '10 has open drains. And every other car (Honda's all) we've had I'm pretty sure was similar. IIRC there's even something in the Owner's Manuals or Maintenance Booklets, about running something up the door drain holes periodically, say when washing the car. Similarly they suggest to pour water around the peripheral of sun roofs, see if it makes out the drain at the bottom. One more, similar, is the plastic filler pieces running the length of roof: you should pull those off occasionally, clean and wax the zone underneath.

Got the car checked out by service and they put a scope down the window and noticed dampness, but didn't see mold growing. One rep said it smelled like cat piss. It ain't good, that's for sure! :(

I'm not surprised it's damp because I washed it twice in the last two days and blasted the windows hard with soap in hopes of "cleaning" something. It's only been a few days since opening the plugs, I'm hopeful there will be improvement over time. I'm cracking the windows in hopes of encouraging airflow. The weatherproofing seems VERY tight. That might be part of the problem. If no air circulates in the door, it isn't going to dry very fast.

The service dept. opened a case for me so Toyota will be chiming in with guidance.

Ran the zip tie up the holes and they were unimpeded.

Cats like marking cars, you know. That is one smell I can easily tell apart. It will smell ammonia, not sulfur. Perhaps cats especially like your car. ;)
