this heats up rapidly in this milder winter weather, but idk how they do it. there are complaints on the bolt forum, maybe from owners in colder climates, idk.

on the earlier bolts, the cabin heat system starts around 29 minutes:

Radar is not needed for distance measurement so Tesla dropped it. That also eliminated some phantom brake events.

I am pretty sure MagicEye uses optical but I could be wrong.

While heat pump system in my PP were super efficient for it's energy use, it was utterly useless when I needed most at temp below 14F. It worked best at around 35F to 45F, but at that temp, I never felt needs for HVAC heating. At 15F to 35F, it worked but not quick enough to be very useful for short commuting.

In our current Escape PHEV, the PTC heater driven by the traction battery is quick and powerful even down to subzero temp. It heats the cabin much faster than using the engine heat alone. But, the down side is the energy usage. It was reported the PTC heater can use 7kW or more. So with the heater on, the EV range (and efficiency) drops dramatically in very low temp.

With a BEV, the larger battery may able to spare more energy for heating. But in absence of "free" engine heat to fall back to, if I am driving a BEV in dead of winter, I would be very nervous to turn on the heater.

Surprised about the lack of radar cruise while having following distance. Perhaps for upselling.

Kind of wish my ACC display gave a time between.

I'm nervious to simply drive in the winter because I did that once in a BEV and it had about half the range as it normally from the low ambient temperature alone.

Now add deep snow or slush or wind.

Now add on top of that the cabin heater.

Not that I wouldn't try it again now that I know first hand how a BEV reacts in winter.

that's one of the reasons i wanted a bev with way more range than needed. my furthest r/t so far is 30 miles.
i wouldn't be concerned with 100-150 in the dead of winter, but i'd have to practice a bit first.
i get about 330 mile range without hvac, and back roads. but i have no idea what it would drop to in really cold wintry weather where i needed a lot of heat

Yes, I had a few pairs myself. But ended up putting away somewhere. They all tend to be thin fashion gloves, not as warm and durable as ski gloves or work gloves I usually use.

SK The one's my wife bought were winter gloves for use wrestling horses and cleaning out stables in Northern Germany. Not huge leather but fairly thick multi-layer fabric.

Thanks. After reading your comment, I searched a "touch screen gloves". You are right, there are quite more heavier gloves now available that weren't when I last checked some years ago. Though, still no real heavy duty gloves, it seems. I found this one that I might give a try. I like the brand Black Diamond.

BLACK DIAMOND Heavyweight Screentap Gloves https://a.co/d/2IOz9aP

When it comes to cold weather wears, I tend to trust mountaineer brand. I have used their climbing gears in the past. I have glove similar to this that I've used for ICE climbing : BLACK DIAMOND Mens Soloist Cold Weather Ski Gloves https://a.co/d/27thHN4

But, it probably is not necessary in the car. As I commented, heated steering wheel has made the gloves inside car unnecessary even with the HVAC heat off.

Someone over on the bolt forums just bought a base for 21k out the door from these folks:

If my Avalon is totaled tomorrow I'll definitely consider one, although I don't see any for sale for 21k. I guess I'd have to haggle, that is, if there are any base Bolts left there. The cheapest on their webpage is just over $30,000.

I think $21k OTD @bisco mentioned is with the $7500 EV credit applied at the point of sale. So it was similar to the one you found online. Most likely Bolt EV LT1 with no or very small option added.

I would not count on haggling with a dealer get the price down much.

$30,000 - $7,500 = $22,500. So kind of close, but I think the cheaper ones are gone and are going.

Here's a similarly priced one in my state that's only 4 hours from here: Vehicle Inventory for Electric Vehicles | Chevrolet (perkinsgm.com)

Still, I'm not going to buy a BEV just yet. I can't afford to repair and own two cars. I'd have to sell the Avalon, but I have too much work put into it to sell it.

.... plus some states will Pony up thousands in addition to feds. That can put the new car price into the thousands /teens realm. Turn in a gently used vehicle as a trade-in and you might see a price that's only in the 4 figures realm.

@Isaac Zachary, for your budget, your best bet on a decent BEV is used Bolt with the recalled battery replaced recently and apply $4000 used EV credit.

I have not read anything about the used EV credit becoming a point of sale discount, but if it is then as pointed out by @hill, OTD price near $10k may not be a dream.
