How low do you let your tank go?

I can solve that problem for 80% of the public straight away! Throw away the credit cards, cancel your entertainment subscriptions, start cooking at home/bring your lunch to work, and learn to live below your means. It can be done at almost any socioeconomic level.

i’m interested purely from a mechanical perspective—does allowing the tank to get too low hurt the engine’s longevity?

You risk hurting the fuel pump with too low of a fuel level.

This Gen5 forum reminds me of the good old days when we had so many brand new Gen3 owners with lots of silly new car owner questions. Very nostalgic!

Only two threads still missing that I haven't seen yet on here are "Oh my god I got a scratch on my paint, what do I do?" and "Oh no, I spilled my soda in my new car, how do I clean it up?"

It's always fun to read about the terrible tragedies and horrific challenges of people who can afford to buy brand new cars that lose 1/3rd of their value in just a couple-few years. I feel so sorry for how hard their lives must be.

I especially feel for the ones who carry multiple upside down car loans that don't get paid off before they finance their next car. It's not fair that they treat themselves so terribly...

Just because I've been on here almost every day for a decade helping poor people keep their beat up old Pruis on the road doesn't matter anymore cause rich folk with their brand new over-priced Prius that are the antithesis of economy car buyers have important questions about what kind of floor mats to buy and when to put gas in their car, which is far more urgent and concerning. That's obvious... Can't even argue against that.

Lately he's been battling them over the difference between the word provenance vs. provenience. Seems none of them know how to look up the definition of a word and they keep trying to convince him that the word provenience isn't a real word:

There is zero basis to make this claim and the only value of refilling at a 1/4 tank is the people who suggest it thinking you're too stupid to know when you're going to run out of gas below that level.
