Featured Very few EVs qualify for the federal tax credit as of 2024

    Where I live, add 10% for tax, license, and fees. So a car at 25 would be 20 with the federal incentive. But there are more ev rebates, utility, county, and state. Maybe cut off another 5. Some places could be more or less. So 15 for a new car, if there is one for 25k sale price, with no trade in.

    I just looked it up. If I'm reading this right, Colorado matches the Federal tax credits. So $4,000 from state on top of the $4,000 from federal. Whether either of those are point-of-sale or not I still have no idea. (THe same for new, Colorado adds an additional $7,500 to the $7,500 federal tax credit).

    The cheapest Bolt on Cars.com is $10,500. If I could get a car like that for $2,500 after credits (add a couple thou for taxes) that would be a very good deal!

    Of course the biggest problem would be that the car is in Minnisota. What would a guy have to do to buy a car long distance? I bought the Avalon in Texas, but I had some vacation time, enough time to get there even though we were hit by a tornado in our Golf along the way and had to replace the windshield and the driver-side mirror in order to make it to Fort Worth.

    Winter weather in the midwest is not something you can ever count on to be safe. Things can sometimes change for the way WAY worse a matter of hours on a long drive like that. Last year I was stuck on top of a snow drift that I thought I could sail across on a Podunk back road paralleling the closed interstate, & fortunately had a shovel with me ... as I dug out in high winds and Sub-Zero temperatures.

    The $4000 fed is the max credit, I think it is 30% of the price. Price has to be under 25k and bought from a car dealer not privately. The car has to be on the list.

    As pointed out, at sales price $10,500, the used EV credit is max out 30% or $3150. Still a great buy, but won't be as low as you hope. Plus complication of buying out of state, traveling, etc.

    $10,500 may already be the price after credit. (Aka gotta ask the dealer since I’ve had 2 lying about the real price already)

    Bolt prices were almost down to 2019 levels then in January 1 most bumped up again.

    would be nice to see them bump back down once more and get a new winter beater.

    a trailer hitch would let me release an elderly vehicle that pulls a lightweight trailer

    Ya, I keep getting excited about buying an EV, but I think I'm going to just have to wait.
    1. This whole tax credit/incentive process is complicated, and dealers not being transparent makes it even worse.
    2. Buying out of state in the winter when I don't have vacation time and living in Colorado is a big disadvantage.
    3. Buying a car that is similar to what I have in utility doesn't make that much sense to me. If I were to go to two vehicles I'd want a car with either a van, a pickup or an off-road capable SUV as the second car. Two cars that do basically the same things don't really make for any sort of advantage, other than fewer oil changes and less short distance wear and tear on the ICE vehicle.
    4. I could sell the Avalon and buy the Bolt and possibly come out with extra cash in hand, or at least pretty close to breaking even, but the Avalon has couple things I've done to it that I'd need to do to the Bolt: a tow hitch, a twin antenna amateur radio setup (cables run all over under upholstry and trim with holes drilled through the roof and trunk for antenna mounts) and the Avalon has a spare tire and jack that are securely mounted. Getting all that done to a Bolt would be a lot of work.
    I need to stop looking at deals on the internet until I really need another car.

    Hard to consider used plug-in as the warranty gives you less time..even my RAV4HV I need to consider updating before 100k miles. Plugins/hybrids may make USA more like Japan where they have incentive to buy new and export the old cars out of the country. My style is to hold for >10 years but maybe less in future. If you are lucky such as Gen2 Prius you may have a e-car reliable to 200k/15 years.

    Many old Bolts have a refreshed battery warranty (and a new battery). What that actually means I have no idea.

    Tesla Model 3’s are supposedly available for $13,000 on up (after credits) from Hertz but 100,000+ miles seems like a very very bad proposition

    What is strange is that all of the Model 3’s that Hertz has on offer seem to have above average miles compared to Hertzes gas cars on sale.

    Without a warranty extension I’m not sure I would want to touch a car that new with that many miles from a rental place, especially considering the cost of parts, if anything breaks it’s Mercedes levels of cost for basic items, even brake pads are steep and you have to clean and lube brake components twice a year in salt country.

    There are several online articles discussing how many of the sales Critters and or managers at used car lots - don't care to get involved with the necessary paperwork to give the credit. So much for moving out their inventory.

    i thought the hertz prices were high, until i found out the m3 base no longer qualifies for the $7,500., but i still wouldn't be interested in 60,000 miles of rental abuse

    You would think a $4000 discount making them more (cost competitive) would drive sales motivating the dealer.

    Makes me wonder if Hertz is treated the same way as a car dealer by the supposed tax credit.

    Lesson is buy from a normal dealer or even TSLA itself to ensure you don’t get a dud.

    The cost of entry for a used Tesla is quite high for the amount of wear and tear it takes to lower the price slightly compared to a Bolt or really any non-Tesla

    Oddly it appears most of the really high mile Hertz Teslas have either already sold or had adds pulled as I already can’t find them (was going to link to an example of $20,500 123,000 miles LR)

    It looks like Hertz bet on Tesla isn't paying off as they had planed. So they are probably trying to get as much money out of their Teslas as possible.
