I still sometimes try to slam on a pedal with my left foot. Sometimes it goes into the floor, sometimes I catch the edge of the too wide brake pedal. Thank goodness modern cars have antilock brakes!

For those that are more accustomed to driving with one pedal there are more and more cars having automatic emergency braking. I would guess that would help.

Personally I would hate one pedal driving as it goes completely against my hypermiling mindset.

Back in 2005, I was at Greenhybrid when Wayne threw a fit and ran off to form CleanMPG. Soon many followed but some stuck around to recruit anyone they could to leave Greenhybrid. Long story short, Greenhybrid was sold to a car dealer/seller and the best, user driven, mileage database fell apart. But there was a fundamental reason for the schism:
    • Driver tuning REQUIRED - the "hypermiler" mantra
    • Hardware and software tuning - works for anyone
Blaming "one pedal driving" ignores that it works with the 99.99% of ordinary, non-technical drivers. Insisting that "hypermiling" is the ONLY D*MN WAY is a Luddite smashing cotton and woolen mills. "Pulse and gilide" is (was?) the worst practice advocated by hyper milers.

The irony is all of my EV cars, a BEV and PHEV, have a perfectly functional ability to shift between "N" and "D" at anytime. No need to 'feather' the accelerator. In fact, my Tesla has the ability to replace regeneration with coasting in "N" with the pedal off. No silly accelerator tricks that less than 0.01% of the drivers will NEVER PRACTICE.

One pedal driving is a novelty, but I have found that just like Prius, gliding when possible and using the regen paddle to slow and stop achieves more miles per kWh.

Shifting into N is illegal. I feather the accelerator pedal, which is pretty hard to do and ends up cramping my leg after a while.

I'm the oddball here. This is why I'm disliking modern cars more and more: they don't make cars that I like. I'm that less-than-0.01%. And having a budget that doesn't let me buy purchase new cars limits my say in the industry even more. I no longer care what my choices are. As long as it has 4 seats and runs, those are my only requirements since there is no car that I like.

But at least I have a car. No need to complain.

iirc you can still buy a Nissan Versa s with manual tranny & crank up windows ~$17K.

So too is speeding over the posted limit or not coming to a complete stop at a STOP sign. Recently, the NHTSA asked Tesla that AutoPilot/FSD implement strict STOP sign actions instead of what the vast majority of drivers do, a soft stop.

There is a live and active antique car movement. Best of all, the older cars appreciate in value, slowly, but just a little bit of dirty fingernail effort.

I don't do either of those. I once got stopped for speeding years ago, back when the 2008 economic collapse had caused my employer to cut my benefits, wages and hours, followed by no job at all. I got a ticket for $180, the same amount of money that I had for the rest of the month, for going 49mph in a 40mph school zone in an area I was unfamiliar with and had a car riding my bumper.

Never again! A lot of people hate the way I drive. I get comments all the time about how I drive so slow. But in reality I go the speed limit, unless the roads are bad with ice and snow or rain. It's just that everyone else wants to go faster than the speed limit.

I also sometimes count to three at a stopsign before moving.

2024 only. In 2025 the Nissan Versa will no longer be sold in the USA, meaning all new cars will be over $20,000 MSRP in 2025.

But yes, if I needed a car today I'd consider one, but I think $17k is still too much for me. It would be the most expensive car I'd have ever owned.

That could mean more likely to be rear ended.

We are assuming the damage is from crashes when all we know is what Hertz said. That the cars being rented in the rideshare program were seeing more damage. I'm sure they are including trashed interiors from the larger number of passengers and door dings when they say damage.

This may be so regardless of drive train.

Some one-pedal driving cars don't turn on the brake lights when regen braking, and a lot of drivers probably don't know that.

When I drove a stick shift and down shifted I'd a lot of times slightly press the brake pedal so my brake lights would light up indicating my car was slowing down.

Yep I think folks are researching the horrendous lithium strip mines with the child and slave labor and amount of huge ICE vehicles needed to mine the stuff that is NOT recyclable and realizing the environmental damage they actually are doing. I think it was Audi that admitted it costs a lot more carbon to make an EV than an ICE vehicle.
And here's a video from a house fire not far from me....EV Jaguar could've killed this family catching on fire in their garage...

The main issue there is in Congress forgetting there is a vehicle code that should be updated. We have the technology to have the brake lights come on at certain levels of deceleration, and it is likely already on the cars for safety equipment. The lights should be coming on regardless of braking, downshifting, or regen when the rate of slowing is fast enough.

With the US National Debt going over $34 Trillion, they need to put the brakes on all these tax-brakes for EVs. If they really cared for the environment, why aren't they going after China, the biggest polluter on the planet?? (Because the politician's pockets area lined with money from them...both Democrats and Republicans.)
China emits 30.7% of the world's carbon while the US emits 13.6% yet Biden is worried about how much water our dishwashers use and trying to ban gas stoves? It's ridiculous.
EVs are not practical, not affordable, and I don't know a single person who only drives an EV, you need an ICE vehicle as a backup. So EVs are just for folks on the upper-end of the economic scale. I guess the working-poor and those are welfare can ride bikes, huh??

The child labor is in cobalt mining. The EV companies are doing more to ensure they aren't using such sources for cobalt. Some models even have cobalt free batteries. Your phone, pads, laptops, watches, ear buds, etc. are more likely to have child mined cobalt than an EV.

Li-ion batteries can be recycled. To support it economically, there needs to be a steady supply of old batteries to recycle. That just takes time to establish.

More GHG is emitted during EV construction than with an ICEV. There is also more GHG emitted making a hybrid. The GHG emitted from use of hybrids and EVs quickly means less overall than with ICEVs.

The parked ICEV fire on my street could have killed an entire family too. There is no evidence of EVs being more fire prone, and they might be less.

The EV credits are a tiny part of the budget. Truly concerned about the Debt. Write your congress critter to cut spending to defense. That is our biggest cost.

Much of China's carbon emissions from the manufacturer of goods for the US. Companies go there to avoid labor and regulation costs elsewhere. China is addressing there emissions, and they emit less per person than the US.

No one is trying to ban gas stoves. Just make them cleaner so kids don't get asthma. Some states are unwilling to address their own water waste, so the feds end up trying to do something.

Many non- upper end economic households have more than one car, and the price of EVs are dropping. The dropping prices is part of the problem Hertz is having with them as an investment.

if you rear end someone, it is not the fault of regen or brake lights, it's your fault.

i read that the exxon valdez environmental crisis was caused by ev tax breaks and child labor

Gotta remember that Hertz sells all their cars, eventually.

So in a way all they did was change the calendar when they realized that both simple market value and depreciation had turned against them.

What's dumb about selling off assets that are depreciating faster than expected?

California's Gavin Newsom in new construction ....

What does a ban on natural gas appliances mean for homeowners? – The Hill

California moves to ban natural gas furnaces and heaters by 2030

But I guess Benzene is okay for people working in commercial kitchens as that's supposed to be exempt.

All electric water heaters dryers furnaces and stoves, then adding Electric cars, new construction might have to put in 300 amp service. Far from a cheap proposition, never mind where all that electric power is supposed to be coming from. Solar with battery backup?

There's legislation for propane kibosh as well. Apparently the hard on to get rid of it only extends to those little 1 lb cylinders foe now
