At first I considered posting a "Happy 3 year old Birthday Cake" picture, because this month is our Prius' 3rd year of existence. But I decided not to get mushy. Anyway, we are on our 2nd MFD in our '04 Prius. The first one was part of the recall about a year and a half ago, or so. Now, our 2nd MFD seems to be 'acting up'. Upon starting up, it appears that the display is somewhat dim. It only lasts about 5 or 10 seconds, but it's especially noticable during the day, because the MFD is having to compete with mister sunshine.

The "bright side" (pun intended) is that we have the bumper to bumper warranty, so we can always have it taken care of. Yes, it's kind of a small matter, and I found only one other topic post about this ... saying it has to do with cold weather (and it is winter even here in So. Cal.) and the flourescent natue of the MFD. The thing is, we never noticed it last winter, even though we were up in Montana at the time. I suspect the dealer would tell me don't worry about it. Any takers?

I found your MFD comments interesting as I too have a bright-dim display that changes after warm up but opposite to your problem.

In my case I have a 2006 that has about 5000 miles on it now and I have noticed that at night or anytime I turn on the headlights when I start the car, the screen diplay is VERY bright like normal daytime settings and does not dim to the night time setting until after a period of time and this time can be anywhere from 3 to 30 minutes! It is very uncomfortable to see the display so bright at night, even with the screen display brightness all the way to the dim position. The screen needs this time I guess to "warm up" before going to the proper setting. After the warm up period, the display dims to a normal setting on its own and is much easier on the eyes. This varible time period appears to be directly related to the outside temp. The colder it is, the longer time before display dims to a normal level.

Does anyone else experience this? Comments, suggestions, or opinions?

    Thanks. Tom-KN6VV

Sheesh, sounds like I'm better at fixin, than gettin fixed. You probably have the little dash light rheostat knob cranked up all the way. That forces the MFD to stay on in 'daylight mode. Now, back to my quandry ...

Been a little chilly in the morning? My MFD doesn't go full bright right away when it's cold out.

Thanks very much for the suggestion but NO, the rheostat is about mid way, I never run it full up and as I stated earlier, the intensity starts out high and without changing anything, it will eventually dim to the lower level on its own. This seems to be opposite to what you and naterprius are experiencing! Best wishes.

Could you elaborate on this? My 2004's MFD is dead and I did not receive recall letter for this problem.

Yeah, mine's dying too. It's not much good anymore on bright days. I'm just a few hundred miles from end of standard warranty and am starting to see little indications of future problems such as this.

To be on the safe side I just spent about a grand for 7 year/100,000 mile extended warranty. It seems to me that there are quite a few unique components on this car that would cost a bundle to replace. Better safe than sorry.

My screen did something weird today.. I only have 3000 miles on the car.

I leave the screen brightness set minus 2 blips from the center.

Today, overcast warm day, I could barely see it at all. So I moved the brightness to plus 2. Even the colors look weird..I had switched that from orange to green. But the green looks dull and more blue now. The orange is dull.

It also reset the mileage to 0 on the screen not Odometer.

When I hit screen display button, I can't see the whole screen, the radio or ac screen is still on in the background.

I haven't heard of anyone having that problem. It's not normal.
