17 inch LE wheel weight?

wish I would have had the tire dealer weigh them when I had them taken off; I see alot for sale online, but no weight listed in the specs...

 

I still want to know the weight of the 17" alloy wheels on the gen 5 Prius LE. I may replace them with lighter 17" wheels, but I need to know how much the original Toyota alloys wheel weigh before I commit. I think some of the other specs of the factory 17" alloy wheel: 17x6.5", +40mm offset, 5x114.3mm bolt pattern/PCD, 60mm center/hub bore, and M12x1.5 lug nut thread.

 

About 21.5 lbs I weighed it at 38lb 9 oz with the stock Bridgestone Ecopia mounted up, this was without the hubcap. Tire Rack has the tire at 17 lbs.

 

Interesting. So you weighed almost the whole wheel package and subtracted the same model tire weight (info from TireRack)? That'll definitely get us in the ballpark, if not pretty close so thank you for that. Out of curiosity, was it a digital scale? And how many miles on your 5th gen Prius tires?

I'm still interested in the naked/bare weight (no TPMS sensor, no adhesive wheel weights, etc.) of the 17" factory alloys of the Prius LE and Prius Prime LE if anyone else comes across this valuable info.

 

Sure, I can do a little better. The tires had less than 200 miles on them. One of the first things I did when I got the car was to take a wheel off to test fit a hand-me-down rim I wanted to use with snow tires, some old 16 inch Konig alloys. They fit great and currently are on the Prius with a set of blizzaks in 205 65 16. Be sure to get a set of lug nuts that suit the rims if you do this. I don't know why Toyota likes to use those mag style lugs.

Anyway, the wheel had 40 grams of wheel weights on it, about .09 lbs.

I stuck a hubcap on my kitchen scale--this one --edit, cant post links the "Escali Primo Digital Food Scale"

It gave me 553 grams or 1.22 lbs.

Bridgestone gave me a more precise weight for the tire, 17.416 lbs. I guess Tire Rack rounds to the nearest pound.

I googled for the weight of a TPMS sensor and the general consensus seems to be in the 1-2 oz range, call it 1.5 or .09 lbs.

We are still very much approximating here, but 38.56 for the combo without the hubcap minus 17.42 for the tire, .09 for the weights and .09 for the sensor. So about 20.96 lbs for the wheel and 1.22 lbs for the hubcap if you want to count it. Sorry, I didn't weigh the lug nuts.

Personally, I'm not sure I could justify the expense of switching to lighter wheels, especially knowing the the really light light ones are either very expensive or very fragile or both--and you would loose the (presumed) aerodynamic benefits of the manufacturer engineered hubcap.

 

Go for it, I hope you get good data on fuel economy with that setup for the rest of us to evaluate. I think I decided that the tire selection, outside of winter tires, in 16 inch sizes was too limiting for me. It's going to have to be at least a 205 and the extra width might negate some benefits from reduced rotating inertia, also the stock ecopia seems to be a remarkably lightweight tire. Anyway here is a picture of my car with the 16 inch winter setup, the wheels are Konig control I think and at least a bit lighter than the stock wheel--they have held up well over at least 4 winters on my last car. I think the image will work if the mod approves it?

 

Hate to resurrect old threads, but figured I'd make a post as I've been doing some digging with a friend.

If you're focusing on weight to improve fuel economy, all-electric range and comfort, you're going to want to dig into the aftermarket.

I've been able to confirm Penny Pincher's figure on a friend's Prime LE, and the OEM 17s weigh in at ~21.5lbs (9.75kg) with no balancing weights or tires. I would recommend sticking with 17x7.5s for the long haul, as over time, tire choices for smaller diameters will dwindle. 17s are still smol even today. RTX Wheels (can not vouch for durability) makes a 17x7.5 "Slick" that is ~15.7lbs (7.1kg). He's transitioned his OEM wheels to dedicated winter duty, and he put on the RTXs with the aero covers for that extra 2-3% efficiency. He paid $730 for the set with shipping (but excluding sales tax). Most other light 17s are in the 17.5-18.5lb range, and aren't cheaper either.

Hacking off 23.2lbs (10.5kg) of rotational weight is quite material! Again, he wanted a 2nd set so he could keep his winters mounted for easy swaps, so this ended up being a total no brainer.

Result? 2000 miles later, around a 7% total increase in fuel economy, and +4 miles of all electric range.

Which aero covers fit the RTX wheels?

 

The wheels I replaced the OEM 19's with were 5lbs lighter each wheel
