    Hi!

Wondering how hard it is to replace a cat converter yourself? I watched a couple videos and understand that there’s a minor welding component that I will need a muffler shop to do for me.

I guess I’m looking for someone to hype me up! Young woman w/ not much car experience but a very analytical brain and a degree in engineering.

I’ve got access to the tools and a way to lift the car.

What’s the best way to source the part? Do I need a genuine OEM part? I’m looking to sell the car pretty soon, which is why I’m so averse to paying $2,500 to get the work done by a mechanic.

You only need the OEM one in certain states, but not in Kansas. The one we reccomend is this one: EPA Catalytic Converter for 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Toyota Prius 1.5L L4 | eBay It comes with the longest warranty and is a direct fit so no welding required, though you might want to buy a more heavy duty pipe clamp than the one it ships with, as well as use Tiger Tape muffler patch to make sure that connection doesn't leak.

Overall the hardest part of the job is safely getting the car high enough up in the air so you can work on it. Also breaking (unbolting) the bolts where cat attaches to exhaust header with a breaker bar.
