2010 Prius Inverter Replacement

The Gen 3 inverter assembly is covered by a 20-year extended warranty by Toyota. Take the car to a dealership for diagnostics. If they determine that it is an inverter problem, it will be fixed for free. By the way, do NOT clear the trouble code because the dealership needs to read the codes to qualify for the warranty.

 

No that seemingly is telling me that it sounds like the control module that's looking for something maybe not doing its job not necessarily that the inverter was doing anything wrong The computer that's looking for the wrong doing might be seeing it because it's looking incorrectly I don't know man I'm not really that down on that craziness. But I imagine the online PDF of the manual or sections of that you can get their troubleshooting and diagnostics for this repair and determination thereof are probably extremely lengthy and take a good bit of doing to make it happen and that may have been overlooked for a quick change out I do it all the time here personally most of the time actually better than 80% of the time it works when you know these cars well enough but some of this electronic nonsense can literally lead you down silly pathways so with some of this stuff it pays to look in the manual and run all the silly tests where you get to do this and do that and eliminate a bunch of stuff some cases it won't be because you'll become well versed and seeing it and you know oh well here we go. To be honest about it and out of I don't know what 10 or 11 Prius that have gone through my hands personally here at my place we've not replaced an inverter yet for any reason we've replaced hybrid batteries etc the wear parts of the system have replaced no motor generators and no inverters here personally and that's only in 10 or 12 cars I haven't dealt with hundreds at least not yet and hopefully won't have to I have read stories about those repairs seemingly pretty straightforward but not had to do them not looking forward to do them I try and buy the cars that don't have those problems and those problems seem to be on the rarer end of the scale.

 

FWIW, the class action lawsuit produced a GOOD result for us at long last. While Toyota took their time getting the inverter repaired while were were mid-trip in Idaho... ultimately we received a check covering our over $1k bill for rental car and lodging caused by this. WHEW.

 

That's pretty spiffy. We have never got one to break yet. Although I'm driving a two right now that I'm wondering if I'm having output problems to the HV battery making some funny interesting charging scenarios but so far I haven't really dug into it to see whether inverter output is waning or something is happening.

 

We had no indication the inverter was about to fail. One moment we were happily driving down the freeway... then suddenly warning lights came on, and there was no EV motor at all. After having pulled over to consider what went wrong... we *could* go about 60mph... but it took about 15 minutes to accelerate to that speed LOL.
