Gas tank size? 2005

So do this You're putting six or eight gallons in You're going 180 mi and what happens You start flashing the light the blip The gas rated for the generation 2 Prius is 11.1 gallons so that means when you run your 8 gallons out you have almost 3 gallons still sitting in the car to get to 11.1 I'm dealing with this in a car right now and this is how I did it in my first one. Firstly I started filling up the car till it clicks off then I feel it slowly and I get another 3 gallons in the car from the time it clicked off so normally I start to fill up on the 2nd click of the pump It's feeling feeling feeling it clicks off it like 6.1 gallons initially I continue to fill it right up to about 10 gallons and I can almost see the fuel at the bottom of the detent or the sizing detent or hole in the tank before it's burping and running out and all of that because I'm filling it slowly I don't allow it to burp and all that I feel it slowly so that I'm slowly expanding that rubber bladder that's in the tank over time Prius people tend to be the kind of people that don't fill up their car they put in five or $10 worth of gas and drive around a week until the blip comes on or starts to flash so on and so forth that allows air to sit in the tank and allows the bladder to dry out and seemingly not stretch and play nice and it makes the car start burping and belching gas at 8 gallons. So right now mine will cut off just before it gets ready to belch I wait about 10 or 12 seconds for everything to run down the tube which is small to begin with the tube running from your filler neck to literally the tank tiny maybe 3/4 of an inch 7/8 something like that It is small then after that has run down enough 10-15 seconds I go on in the field very slowly from 6 point some odd gallons and I'll get real close to 10 so that means I had about 1.1 gallons left in the car when I pulled into the service station.

 

Cold weather kills gas mileage... You probably also have a battery pack that is older and needs reconditioning and tune up stuff can help like throttle body cleaning, Mass air flow sensor cleaning, new spark plugs, engine flush treatment, fuel injectors testing, etc...

As for the quess gauge problem... It's basically like trying to measure how much water is in a water balloon with a level meter. There's a method explained on PriusChat to recallibrate your guess gauge.

The easiest way to get the bladder back to full capacity is a really long multiple day drives in super hot weather and keeping the tank as full as possible.

Last resort is pull a gas tank assembly off a wrecked Prius at a parts yard. You can't really change parts with these things. Just gotta swap out the whole assembly.

This is a generation 2 right that should be 11.1 gallons is what the factory manual I believe says in the glove box the generation 3 may be 11.9 which basically is 12 gallons but I think the generation 2 was 11.1 but I'm not a betting man but it's very close to that I don't think it's 11.9.

The bladder will sometimes cause issues. Just like people, when they get to a certain age! Go with the old method, fill the car, reset the trip odometer. Drive a hundred or 2 and refill, at the same gas station. Do the math. That said, the winter formulation for gas around here will take mpg down by as much as 5 in my experience. And my computer shows avg 35 mpg but the math says 38. If that is your only issue with an almost 20 year old car count your blessings.

 

I'll have to look at those I'm looking right here in my owner's manual for the '08 model year fully loaded JBL GPS non-touring non 16-in wheel non-extended spoiler version of the car which there is four of here I'm looking in one of the manuals I just wanted to make sure that I was somewhat close because when I do my business here I'm having the same problem with a couple of cars My light is flashing and I even drive 40 miles with the light flashing and then stop it sheets zero out everything fill the car up and slam full as I can get it till it's almost burping at me dropping on my foot the gas that is and I've only put in 8.1 8.4 gallons so that leaves me three something sitting in the tank that'll carry me from my 402 mi that's showing on the clock while I'm filling up to the 500 that I'm looking for. And it still won't be showing 50 some odd miles to the gallon on the MFD but I don't care what if that thing says I care about what the math says about gallons gone gallons replaced and miles driven I don't care if that MFD says I'm getting $192 mi to the gallon We know better.

 

I get about the same useable tank capacity in my 2006. It's more like 8+ gallons in summer.

Ignore that for now. Look at total miles driven divided by total gallons used. A larger data set makes the result more accurate.

I'm in NJ and get low 40's MPG in winter, near 50 in summer.

Lots of things can hurt MPG. Weak HV battery, restricted exhaust, driving habits, wheel alignment, missing air shields, engine condition- wear, etc

No that's not acceptable any kind of way You must have some real problems going on because even with a bad HV battery and all that kind of nonsense I was getting 39 ice engine running all the time so it was like driving underpowered Yaris imagine that but around town and all the car drove fine and drove it up to pick up my new HV battery drop off the core then immediately fitting the new HV battery 47.1 mi to the gallon from the minute I bolted the battery in practically Brand new from Toyota right about the beginning of the pandemic or few months in 1645 I paid and you're getting 25 yeah you've got some sorting out to do find out why that is nothing in your Prius should be causing fuel usage like that holy Christ I hope that is a over or miss statement where they're on purpose doesn't matter I get ya.. so I guess back to the basics for a few You're not running poorly? No misfires their codes for that just out of curiosity even recently I had random misfires in the car actually with the battery we were just talking about and I was still getting 42 mi to the gallon fix the miss. Right back to 4547 mi to the gallon something like that

Yeah, that is not right and have legitimate cause for being annoyed. Something is not right with your car but it might not be something that is easy or economical to fix.

Your 85 911 gets 25 MPG? Maybe but I doubt it. EPA rating was 25 highway but the drive cycle back then was a joke. Did you do the test I suggested? There is a small probability something is very wrong with your prius but I doubt it.
