Engine keeps starting and shutting down during traffic light stop

    Hello,

I've been driving my 2007 Prius for about a month now and I recently noticed the engine starts and stops continuously when I stop at a traffic light. My brake is firmly pressed. The engine just comes on, off, on, off, on, off, etc....until I drive to the next block, then it shuts off normally like it should. This doesn't happen very often but twice this week already. I took it to the dealership and the service advisor said that because I have my climate control set to windshield/foot vent (the setting on the far right side), the A/C comes on and starts the engine. Then when engine power is not needed for the A/C, the engine will turn off. Has anyone experience this odd behavior?

The A/C compressor does run when you have the defrosters on just as with most other cars. However what is different is that in this car the A/C compressor is turned by an electric motor so it runs off the battery. However if you have it on the engine will need to run from time to time to recharge the battery, but not very often. Also this time of year you most likely need heat and the engine will run from time to time to provide that, and to keep it's catalytic converter warm and functional.

But if it comes on-off-on-off all the time you may be seeing something different, check this topic:

The same thing happens to me if:

    1) I have just come down from a big hill and the battery is completely full. The car will try to drain off the excess by using the battery to turn the engine, but usually it only turns the engine for about 5s and then stops - then runs it again. I wish it would run it a little longer and be done with it!

    2) If I have the heater on and I'm at a traffic light close to the beginning of my drive before the car has had a chance to warm up. There isn't much cycling, but if the light is long the engine might come on once or twice.

This is usually a daily occurrence since I live in a valley and have to drive over hillls on my commute.

I'll bet your car isn't broken - at least search this board before going back to the dealer. Let us know what you find out!

4 distinct possibilities, covered in the various theads linked, but not really summarized well....

1)In cold winter the most common cause of the rapid cycling of the ICE on and off, particularly just shortly after coming to a stop is that the battery SOC is high...this is common in the winter since the ICE runs more in order to keep/reach ideal ICE temp while driving. Thus, you come to a stop, the battery SOC is in the 'green' level and part of the 'job' of the car is to keep the battery SOC more toward the 'blue' zone. So, the ECU tells the car to spin up the ICE via MG1, it does so, runs briefly, then shuts off....each cycle puts a significant drain on the battery and once a more acceptible SOC is achieved the cycling stops (typically 4-7 cycles in fairly rapid succession).

2)ICE running to maintain it's own temp. In cold weather our little aluminum ICE cools quickly. Particularly at the start of a trip from a cold start the ICE might only reach 130 degrees or so before your first stop...it's warm enough to allow it to shut down as usual. But shortly after that it drops to 128 degrees due to radiant heat loss...the ECU doesn't like that an tells the ICE to warm back up. In this condition the ICE will usually run for longer periods of time (30-60 seconds?) and won't cycle back on quite as quickly once it shuts off again.

3)Low SOC....if you battery is drained a bit and you're running multiple accessories, esp. the AC/Defrost, etc. The ICE may spin up and run just to recharge the battery while you're stopped. This acts a bit more like #2 above where the ICE spins for relatively longer times and stays off for longer amounts of time.

    4) I call this the 'tweener' state.... One of various conditions exist based upon ICE temp and battery SOC where the system thinks it can shut down, but as soon as it does the thresholds change and it triggers the start up code...I can't clearly say what these conditions are as I've only seen it a handful of times in the 3+ years with my Prius, so it's pretty uncommon, but definately occurs even with a warmed up vehicle. I think the car just can't see that it's cycling back and forth while it blindly follows it's algorhythms.

In no case are these situations of any concern.

Thanks for all the feedbacks...it does seem like the behavior in your above link. I'm in the bay area so climate is not too cold ~50-60F. I have my heater off, and this happens at the same intersection near my house twice and no where else yet. This intersection is a block after a long down slope off ramp. The battery might be fully charge at the time...I'll pay attention next time. Maybe it is trying to use up excess charge on the battery.

    Hi there,

My 2007 Prius has started giving the same signs of this issue yesterday. While at a redlight the petrol engine seems to start and shut down continuously, each time causing the car to jerk. Today, it happened while driving.
Anyone know what could be the cause of this?
