It is if you wan't a BEV but they don't make one that you can afford and that actually goes more than 100 miles or so.

When BEVs of those levels come around, and they will, possibly already in other markets, they won't cost much more than the ICE model to own.

The OP's "letter to biden" (that no one's in the ev market) is hilarious. Manufacturers make just a handful .... then stealerships try & bend you over with $5K to $10K above msrp? LOL
talk about a self fulfilling prophecy.
What stealerships just did, was to seal their own fate. Many will NEVER go back for ANY of their products after treating customers for being the morons they mistakenly took them for.
Made the bad mistake of buying Nissan's gen1 as well. VIN ending 000659. by mile 75,000 it only had a range of 38 reliable miles. Less on a hilly freezing morning.
What a giant turd. Optimistically speaking, the new ones are less than ½ the turd they used to be.
    ;)

I'm not so sure of that, as the ICE version of those kinds cars are also disappearing. At least the Versa is scheduled to go bye bye, as are all other sub $20,000 cars in the USA. The Corolla will be next.

I did a search for a used 2017-20 Bolt in a 25 mile radius from here and found several in the $15000-17000 range. Besides being eligible for a federal tax break, they also have new batteries, due to the recall. Sounds like a deal to me.

At least John likes the Bolt,

    IMG_4792.jpeg

it appears a vehicle that isn’t even produced is selling in larger numbers than the in production EV offerings from several other manufacturers.

In the PHEV front GM sadly appears to be going for $100,000+ plugin hybrids (Silverado, Suburban, etc)

GM's return to hybrids could start with big pickups and SUVs.

Poor John - he has hung his anti-voltec hatrid hat for soooo long - on the notion GM wasted R&D $$ on a system that never got used after its developement (when in fact it's still utilized in china). Now that GM is bringing the tech back to a much larger world market - especially with less & less costly battery chemestries now .... it's likely gona kill him.

Did the Chinese government make license plates as easy and affordable as BEVs?

BYD's EV sales success is counting their PHEVs for the numbers. An EREV is just an easier way of making a PHEV from a BEV model. The reason to not do it for a company is that increases costs as the model has to now meet ICE emissions. A big cost for a start up EV company. Traditional car companies can afford it, but have ICE models to sell.

My take was BYD is making a manufacturing pivot to give the Customer what they want and what the market is demanding!

Don't believe they made this decision out of the kindness of their heart.

byd has been making a Qin phev since 2012. The new one is Qin plus is lower priced to compete with vw lads and Toyota corola in china. It is a very cheap car $11K. I have no idea how they do it, but it is not a new strategy for byd they have been making a Atkinson 1.5L engine for over a decade

They will now be installing their engines in their EV's.

"EREVs are primarily powered by their electric motor and battery pack. They do not use the gasoline engine to directly power the wheels. The gasoline engine acts as a range extender, kicking in only when the battery depletes, generating electricity to power the electric motor and extend the driving range."

No electric range anxiety - just keep driving and gas up or charge up- you chooses which- when convenient.
    These are EREV's.

Great idea and an answer to the many alternate strategies discussed here for dealing with your EV when its charge craps out in the middle of nowhere or where electric charging isn't available.
I remember one thread discussing which generator a member should be carrying with him for emergency charging his vehicle. He was also discussing how to safely transport his fuel for the generator in his vehicle.

My point was that BYD didn't do any pivoting, They've been selling PHEVs for years now; something like 1.4 million last year. They've been around long enough to have started with ICE cars.

The makes in your link that are pivoting are start ups whose oldest models came out in 2019. One might be exporting to Thailand, otherwise these are still small enough to not leave China. Sounds like PHEVs are big in China, and they needed to add an EREV to their BEVs in order to grow.

I see where I mentioned BYD in post 115 - I meant Chinese's EV makers.
