Longtime lurker, first time poster. Original owner of a 2014 Prius v (Three).

I use the onboard Bluetooth to link to my phone. Until recently, using the console screen while driving, I could read texts sent to my phone, and compose texts with the console's on-screen keyboard.

Last week, for the first time, the functionality changed. All of a sudden, when I selected a text from the list on the console screen, instead of displaying the text, it said "function not available while vehicle is in motion" (or something like that), and the text was read out loud. I can no longer compose texts while the car is moving. (I can read, compose, and send texts just fine when the car is stopped.)

A couple days later, it changed back—I could once again read and write texts on the console screen while the car was in motion.

A couple days later, it changed again—no reading or writing texts while driving.

The only recent service is a head gasket replacement (at 147k miles, after the infamous startup rattle), but the behavior of the text function didn't change until about a week after that.

Any ideas on what's going on? I'm sure the "no reading or writing texts while in motion" feature is intended as a safety feature, but I'd really like to have that function back.

The Bluetooth text message display and reply function has not worked since I changed from a Windows Phone to an iPhone, 8 years ago. My sense is that a phone protocol issue is involved.

    Bummer.

I'm using the same phone I have been using for the past few years. There was no change in behavior when I switched to my current phone a few years ago. I haven't changed any settings, phone or car Bluetooth.

I suspect it's something in the car settings, but I have no idea what.
