My 2012 Gen 3 with 190,000 has had approx. $4000 worth of work (including labor) to install a new water pump, new tpms sensors, new 12 volt, new windshield wiper motor. Last week it started knocking loudly and engine light came on and stayed, drove it to the shop with no problems or knocking, only the engine light was on. The shop is saying the engine is blown and it will be approx. $3000 to replace. Is it worth it to replace or time to let it go? And if I let it go is it best to junk it for $300 (estimating) or try to sell it online for whatever I can get (minus the tow bill)?

A friend of mine in Oklahoma is dealing with the same mess while it's still running before it gets crazy bad and throws a rod put it up for sale you'll be surprised how many idiots will come by and pay $4,000 for it It is shocking I can't imagine but this is real and it is happening now I've seen people do this and there's that.

You'll have seven grand worth of work done on a 200,000 mi Prius whatever edition I don't think I'd want to get that far into a generation 3 personally I've got one sitting here that I have five in and it has a new motor in it and it's still rattling and there's that and it's not good.

The generation 2 is already old and will get even older. Even 2010-2011 gen 3 is old for me.
Number 1 problem on gen 2 is a peeling clear coat. The second problem is a hybrid battery. It is already difficult to find a good one on gen 2 with over 150k miles. The only gen 2s I'm still considering are 08-09 with ~100k miles.

Clear coat oh you're still keeping up with the Joneses and worried about what's in the driveway actually the three I've bought in the last couple of years to clear coat was the least of the problem except on the very upper portion of the roof possibly I have an '07 out here I just got a few months ago the paint's near perfect I don't wash cars and detail cars much personally and I don't get out of them because they're dirty fading or old what I care about is the interior I like nice clean leather interiors no cloth anywhere in sight that type of thing two of my generation twos are full leather full JBL very very reasonably clean inside no rips in the seats damaged headliners vents broken that sort of thing and a generation 3 all of the things mentioned above will be very hard to keep up unless you have a nice garage etc even the sheet metal on the generation 3 don't lean over the edge of the front of the car to reach a hose or something and lean too hard against the front fender you'll completely dent it and ruin it. I love for them to have over 200,000 mi even 250 is okay I got one with 171 a few months ago and it actually looked just like a 140 mileage car one owner serviced at the Toyota dealer all its life the dash shut off the lady was told that was going to cost $8,000 to fix hysterical I bought it for $700 drove it away from there but yeah I want the high mileage ones as long as they look okay preferably not a lot of dense It's okay if they have scratches from driving off road if you will but generally no big dents and things like that and a generation 2 is going to keep running carry the 600,000 a Gen 3 you'd be lucky to make 320 and that's staying in the wind if you're professional driver you can probably make that with a Gen 3 and get the head gasket problems and then you may not feel so bad about it but when it happens at $149,000 that's pretty crappy for this marque. And we ain't having none of it.

If you offered it online for $1000 you'd have to spend all day answering messages. You could probably get $2500-3000+ for it pretty quick, especially since it's probably just a blown head gasket. Definitely don't junk it for $300. Also, if that's really all the work you had done for $4000 then your shop is ripping you off, unless there were some crazy diagnostics involved that's way too much.
