    Hi everyone

I am desperately looking to find the reinforcement for the glove compartment door for a Prius 1st generation.

I want to deinstall the fan to clean it and to be able go get to the cooling part of the AC to desinfect it.
Deinstalling the fan is a desctructive process, a plastic piece has to be cut off. Therefore there is that reinforcement part that is needed after reinstalling the fan.

Probably I will never find that part. But it would be helpfull if at least I could get some pictures and measurements of it so I can maybe rebuild it myself.

Anyone of you having that part installed?

I made you a picture so that you better understand. The cuts are made at the vertical red lines left and right.
The part in between the red lines, marked with a red wave is then completely separated and has to be bypassed by that reinforcement part.

I've only heard about this so the piece you're cutting out that's marked with red that's plastic or is there metal behind it that you've got to cut out? So if that's the case then the piece that the dealers going to supply you or whatever is going to be a piece of metal more than likely that goes from the two screw holes that are right beside the little lines that look like that's what you're going to cut there are two cars where I've been going I'll look and see if this has been dealt with in that piece is there but I kind of doubt it usually they went to the junkyard before this went on are you saying you can't get this piece from the dealer anymore what about amyama.com? I have not personally looked I don't own a generation one.

Hi Tombukt, thanks for your answer.
You are right, it will be fixed with screws in the holes right and left from the two red vertical marks left and right.
The piece that has to be cut is made of plastic.
The issue I have is more about the bendings and the thickness of that reinforcement part.
I ordered at amayama already and on other sites. I instantly got the payment back with the information that they don't have that part in stock and also that it is discontinued.

Here it is: 55558-47010 Genuine Toyota Reinforcement, Glove Compartment Door.
Better snap it up while it still shows.

Thanks for your inputs. Amayama was one of the sites I ordered and got my money back with the information that this part is discontinued and not in stock. Then they changed the availability on the site. Toyotapartsdeal was another one if not the first I checked for that part and they don't had it either.
But it's a moment since then, so maybe they got that part in the meantime. Now I just ordered again.. and I expect to get the money back on my paypal soon with some infos about the non-availability of that part... But who knows, maybe I'm lucky this time. I will let you know!

I was under the impression that it was not a three-dimensional part like shown in the drawing on the Toyota part site I thought it was more like a cover that covers the slot where your video card goes on your computer although a little longer and a little wider and sheet metal just to go between the two points you're cutting out and that's it but I guess I'm wrong I don't know it would seem to me you would just want a metal strip to go between those two gold screws that I don't think you cut out and cut out like right at the slots in the plastic like we're the seam is I thought but I don't know the repair so I'm just guessing.

I found the email about my first inquiry to toyotapartsdeal and it dates back to october 2022. I remember that after the negative result this part was still listed as available though it was not available.

But this time it seems they really have it, I just got an email that a package was sent! I'll show you that part once I got it, promised. :)

Wow, you're in luck! Mmm, maybe I should buy one just in case I ever need to service the blower fan/motor....

I had a thought along these lines: if you cut the plastic piece out carefully, you might be able to reuse it provided that you could fashion new brackets at each end (out of metal) and tie into the existing holes as shown in the photo. Of course, you won't have to try this now that the genuine article is coming.

I'm looking forward to seeing a photo or two of the new bracket when it arrives, as promised. I'd like to see how Toyota does it. Thanks in advance!

I also think that it could be done with some bricolage... But I really want the original piece and I try to avoid self-made work that maybe doesn't work out in the end. Making something myself really is the last option for me.

I will provide as much data as one needs to rebuild it himself. Fotos, exact measurements of thickness, width, depth, length, angles, bendings, diametres of the holes, etc..... no one shall be short of that part anymore. :)

Many thanks for your input. If you hadn't been there I would have stuck to the fallacy that made me think that their availability information is still wrong because it was wrong once.

(Just got the answer from jp-carparts.com, they don't have this part anymore either.)

I'm looking forward to the package of toyotapartsdeal.

I'll check my parts cars. I've never noticed one way or the other. I had read about this part when I was considering pulling an AC out of one car. Just the way it re-attaches with two little screws at each end suggests that it doesn't provide much strength or stability to anything. I forget whether it also has a trim edge exposed, or something, to make it necessary.

Except, Ron, it looks to me like the hinges for the glove comp. door attach to that cross piece (see photo in first post in this thread).

Looks like the screw that holds each hinge is the same one that will hold that cross piece. The piece itself is just filler. But yeah, now that I look at that pic, it would be noticeable, if missing, with the glove box open. I'd live with it or fab something that would look OK for the rare times anyone sees it.

    So my friends!
I got this reinforcement today and it was full of stickers.. had to apply the power of the coconut oil to clean the metal.

This part is half coated with a sort of hard wax or plastic, I left the residues of the stickers there as you can see.

It's designed pretty 'complicated' and doesn't look so easy to measure and rebuild it properly.

It's 31cm in length, the metal is of 1.2 or 1.3mm of thickness. The two biggest holes measure 8mm in diameter.

If anyone is interested, I will provide more information about the measurements.

    It's a pretty stable piece! IMG_4588.jpeg IMG_4587.jpeg IMG_4586.jpeg IMG_4585.jpeg IMG_4584.jpeg IMG_4583.jpeg

That does look stout. I guess it's not just cosmetic. So, that one was used? Good find. I'll keep my eyes out for that part going forward - it'll be needed someday.

Ron, no, it looks new or unused and had even a Toyota sticker on it besides some others. I imagine it‘s from a stock of a shop that was liquidated but who knows…
On toyotapartsdeal it is still available, maybe they got a couple of them?

Well, if the part goes in.... then it must be able to come out for your repair. Have a look at the full assembly drawings around the glove compartment (the Toyota dealer in your neighbourhood may be able to show you). I'm guessing that the whole cover around the glove box comes out (which covers the reinforcing piece plus all the stuff behind it). But given the 'seamless' appearance of the Gen 1 dashboard, it may be one of those parts that gets snapped in place at manufacture time with the expectation that it will NEVER have to be removed again.

At any rate, good luck with your repair procedure! Keep us posted.

Right: at the factory, they put the HVAC box and blower in, then they put the dash on. With the expectation that if you EVER have to remove the blower, you can either:

    • take the whole dash off again, or
    • make the two indicated cuts in the plastic dash, remove the blower through the gap, then buy this repair part to close the gap when you're done.

Later generations don't even cater to you that much ... they just let you pull of the whole dash if need be.
